Shortcut icons      These are recognized by the little arrow in the picture. It is an extra “button” to start a program.

                    The task bar

The taskbar is the area on the bottom of your screen with shortcuts and open programs. Some users like to "hide" their taskbar to have more screen space until they need it (right click taskbar .. properties). To unhide the taskbar, just move your mouse to the bottom of the screen. The area on the right, with the time and the speaker is called the tray.

Windows+M will always bring you back to the desktop.

You can move the icons around to organize yourself better.

 Expert users:

You can place new icons (buttons) on the desktop, or make a folder for yourself with your favorite programs.

You can change the background for a more pleasant picture. On the Internet, or in many photo or graphic programs, there is an options, "Set as Wallpaper" This is a quick way to change your desktop once in a while.

You can also drag icons into the taskbar (in windows 98) Use your right mouse to create a shortcut that is always visible!

How do you change your icons if they are locked in position, and apparently will not move when you drag them?
What do you do if somebody moved several (or all) icons beyond the visible area of the desktop?

Exercise:  Make a new icon on your desktop that points to c:\windows\calc.exe
