Scruffy as a ratlet

Scruffy is the friendliest rat in the house!  She's the first one out to greet me when the cage doors are open, and she's the only one that consistently comes out to see me every time I come in the room.  She is a very curious little rat!  Scruffy is a Rex rat, and her curly (scruffy) fur is amazing!  Scruffy was hand-raised by a local breeder, although I got her from Petco after she had been placed for adoption.  Upon adoption, she promptly got to visit my parents at their office, got tons of pets from a scared secretary, and got to go to two different banks to drop off deposits.  Scruffy is very well behaved!

Scruffy's name... duh... she's scruffy!  The name was chosen the moment I picked her up!

Scruffy Facts:

  • Alpha rat!

  • She can chow down a yogie before anyone else finds a spot to eat one!

  • She has the best belly for belly kisses!

December 17, 2006 - Scruff's Lump

On Dec 17th, I found a lump on my Scruffy's shoulder area.  She was taken to the vet the morning of the 18th to attempt to aspirate the lump.  The vet said it was a solid mass, which scared me!  The vet asked me to keep an eye on it for changes, and if it didn't go away on its own or if it got larger, she wanted to remove it.  Well, it doubled in size, at least, within a couple days, so I made an appointment to get it removed as soon as the vet was available.  Here is an image of Scruffy's lump before removal on the 27th (click for full-size)::

After Scruffy got home from surgery, she decided she wanted to stay in her carrier for a while.  Here is her posh carrier equipped with food, water, blankets, toys, chews, and a hammock... well, the toys, etc, were added after the picture... hehe (click for full-size):

Scruffy stayed in her carrier until the morning of the 31st- when I forced her back into the cage.  She had been in the cage on the 30th, but during "play time" she got in and stayed in, refusing to come out!  It was probably for the best; her incision looked much better on the 31st than it did on the 30th.

Lastly, here is the best picture of Scruff's incision that she would let me get (click for full-size):

I am still waiting to hear from the vet to find out what the lump was.  I am hoping it was just a cyst and not a mammary tumor.  I will update this section as soon as I can!

Update: January 3, 2007

Scruffy's lump results came back! The vet said it was a benign mammary tumor.  Benign is good, but Scruffy is just so young!!! I hope she doesn't develop any more of these tumors; they are quite common among non-spayed female rats.

Mmmm medicine!
Scruffy discovers the custard-flavored rat medicine... but it's in a bottle!!!

Finally some peace and quiet!
