St. James Catholic Church

Gallery III - The Stained Glass

The stained glass windows of St. James Church are a magnificent sight to behold. Nine of the windows in the nave of the church present the story of one of Jesus' most beautiful homilies: The Sermon on the Mount.

The large window in the north transept is 34 feet high and 15 feet wide. It represents the Sermon on the Mount. Eight other windows around the nave signify the Eight Beatitudes exemplifying the lives of different saints.

Mt 5: 1-12a

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain,
and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
He began to teach them, saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven."

The large window on the south transept, is the same size as the north window. This window represents the artist's view of heaven. The upper level portrays the Blessed Mother, Christ, God the Father, St. Joseph and John the Baptist. The Holy Spirit is pictured as a dove at the top. The four evangelists are symbolized by a young man for St. Matthew, a lion for St. Mark, an ox for St. Luke and an eagle for St. John. Standing left center are: St. Teresa of Avila and St. Barbara. Right center are: St. Augustine and St. Anthony the Hermit. Kneeling: Mary Magdalen, St. Lawrence, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Stephen, St. Clare, St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Jerome, and St. Gregory the Great.

Below are images of the windows which line the north and south of the building. They all represent the Eight Beatitudes.

Clicking on the Saint's names, will allow you to read about their lives.

Clicking on each window will give you a larger view. There is a photo of the windows full size, and then again a photograph of the section depicting the Beatitude it represents. Use the buttons to preview the slide show or return to the Gallery page.
