St. James Catholic Church

Gallery I - The Sanctuary
Sanctuary in Ordinary Time

The magnificence of the St. James' sanctuary is breathtaking.

"Every knee shall bend" Phil 2: 8-10

The 34 foot high altar was hand carved from bass wood. It was specifically designed for this church and was a gift from the Knights of Columbus. As you will see from the pictures on the history page, the altar presentation has changed from the 1912 interior. The altar is on the east wall of the church -- so as the sun rises in the east, we too are facing the east. Matthew 24:27

The front altar's panel contains a raised relief scultpure of the Last Supper. The back altar has a carving of the Crucifixion, with Mary, His mother, Mary Magdalen and St. John at His feet. Under the spire at the top is St. James. It is flanked by statues of the Blessed Mother and St. Joseph. These two statues were originally part of the side altars, as in their place was St. Boniface (on the gospel side of the altar) and St. Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary (on the epistle side).

The windows of the sanctuary each tells a story from the life of Christ: Presentation of the keys to St. Peter, Christ welcoming the children, the penitent Mary Magdalen and the Marriage at Cana. There are also two side windows over the side altars portraying Christ in the temple and the Nativity.
