Pattern source: The modern quilt workshop : patterns, techniques, and designs
from the Funquilts Studio by Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr (2005: Quarry Books). If you look
it up on Amazon, you'll see this pattern (Zipper) on the cover.
This was a Christmas present, started in late August, finished by Dec. 2. It's a “napping
quilt,” as I wouldn't have had time to finish a large bed-sized one, given that it was 100
per cent hand-sewn. The authors depicted several color choices and styles in the book. I like my
quilts fairly scrappy, so I used more colors than they did for this size of quilt. I liked their
idea of using a neutral color for the backing and binding, and a matching color of quilt thread.
I was less impressed with their arguments for pressing the seams open, as is done when
making clothing. Unless you stitch pretty closely, the batting can show through.
I tried free-form quilting too, but that might work better when using a machine — for me, anyway!
So I wound up marking chalk quilting lines anyway. Not that it mattered, since with this pattern, you can work
with one block and row at a time. The second image is a close-up of the quilting.
