Susannah Brown's noncupative will was ordered filed, with the statement that she called her son John, named in parentheses as John E. Crouch, into the room when she was dying and, in front of witnesses, stated that she wanted John to inherit her estate because he had always been a dutiful son.

Following tidbits in this article: 02 Nov 1852 Charles W. Crouch was administrator to estate of John E. Crouch in Nacogdoches Co TX. From History of Kaufman County Vol. II published 1983 by Kaufamn County Historical Commission at Kemp, TX:1860 census Kaufman Co TX lists C. W. Crouch with no wife. According to the article, this information compiled by Mr. John P. Bailey of Gainesville TX.
5. Nancy Crouch 4, born c1811, per 1820 census; married Richard Brown.[6]
6. Peter Crouch 4 born c 1813.
Note Linda Stufflebean in her book on the Williams family had James Crouch, who married Louisa Garrett, 3 Feb 1835, Williamson Co., TN. as a child of John Crouch and Susannah Williams. Based upon citation [6] below and Charles M. Nusbaum's Rootsweb WorldConnect data file has James Edwin Crouch born 15 FEB 1810, as a son of John Crouch and Elizabeth Bradberry marrying Louisa Garrett in Williamson County, TN. Said James Edwin Crouch was born in Henry County, VA; and grew up in Green County, Kentucky. James Edwin Crouch. Citation [6] below reinforces Charles M. Nusbaum's by listing Ephraim Brown's gift to the Crouch children of John Crouch and Susannah Williams.
Marriage bond record found that Susannah Williams married John Crouch October 20, 1794 Pittsyvlania County, Virginia, consent of her father, Charles, given. Married by Rev. Thomas Sparks, with William Astin as surety. Susannah was seventeen when she married. See Some Virginia Marriages 1700-1799 Volume One, compiled 1972 by Cecil D. McDonald, Jr. & Pittsylvania County, VA MARRIAGES 1700-1799.
In December 28, 1799 Land Indenture in Goochland County, Virginia from John's mother Susannah Crouch, the wife of John 2 Crouch deceased lists John 3 Crouch as: "John 3 Crouch of the state of North Carolina"
In 1800, John 3 Crouch is listed on the Rockingham Co., NC census. In the household are a male 26-45 (John), a female 16-26 (Susannah), a male 16-26, female 16-26, female 10-16, female 10-16, male 10-16 and a female 0-10. John 3 Crouch's brother-in-law Charles Williams, Jr. and Peter Williams are there also.
On April 23, 1801 John Crouch sold land on Wolf Island Creek in Caswell County, North Carolina, to Major Brockman for 100 lbs. Susannah Crouch also signed. Witnesses were Turner Patterson, James Brockman, Peter Williams and Obediah Tucker.
John 3 Crouch is then found on the Pittsylvania County, Virginia (county just north of Rockingham Co., N.C.) tax lists for 1802, 1803, 1804, 1805, 1810 and then again in 1811. Since he was taxed for himself, slaves and horses, it appears that he moved often and finally left the area around 1812. In 1802, 1803 and 1804 there is a Hardine Crouch listed next to him, taxed only for himself and a horse.
John 3 Crouch and his wife Susannah apparently left VA between 25 May1811, when John gave bond to William Ware in Pittsylvania Co [1] and December 1813, when he died in Williamson Co., TN. [2] William Ware sued Susannah in 1817 in Williamson Co. over the matter of the bond.[3]
There are several court records on John 3 and Susanna Crouch in Williamson County that refer to their coming from their home in Virginia/North Carolina.
John 3 Crouch didn't leave a will when he died. His death date was found in a lawsuit originating back in Pittsylvania Co. saying that when Susanna's father, Capt. Charles Williams, died, others did not receive their share. John Crouch wasn't looked upon too highly by her father, who thought he squandered assets. Williamson Co. Will Book 2:66 shows a listing for John 3 Crouch. Susannah's will in 1845 was on a film in Los Angeles. I may or may not have read the Salt Lake film (453,935) with the info on John on it. County court minutes (p. 73) for 6 April 1814 show letters of administration issued for Susannah on John's estate. The estate sale results were returned for July court and the estate settled in Oct. 1814.

[4] Among family notes the following information was found:
"Crouch, Charles W. shown as administrator to estate of John E. Crouch, 2 November 1852 Nacogdoches County."
From the "History of Kaufman County, Vol. 11, published 1983 by the Kaufman County Historical Commission at Kemp, Texas, we learned that:
"John Crouch, born 1767, married Susannah Williams in 1794 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. One of their sons, Charles William Crouch, was born 12 Sept. 1806 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Evidence shows that John and Susannah moved their family to Williamson County, Tennessee between 1810-1813. John Crouch died in Franklin (Williamson) Tennessee on December 14, 1813. Susannah Williams married again on May 6, 1823, to Ephriarn Brown. She died the 23rd of February 1845 in Williamson County. Charles William Crouch married Lucretia/Lucressey Nash on June 6, 1827, according to marriage bonds on file in Williamson County, Tennessee. In 1840 we find C.W. and Lucretia in San Agustine County, Texas. In 1844 C.W. Crouch is married to Martha A. Smith and married again in 1849 to Amanda Norwood. In 1860 C.W. Crouch is living in Kaufman County. No wife is listed in this family."
This information was compiled by John P. Bailey of Gainesville, Texas.
We are thankful for the efforts expended in this search for Crouch beginnings in this country. Mr. Bailey's article began "Crouch is an English name. The caucasian Crouches came to Virginia in the 1600's. These following family memebers are original Crouches in the U.S.. William Crouch came to the colonies in 1637, Nicholas and another William Crouch came in 1650. Another Robert Crouch arrived in 1654, and Richard Crouch arrived in 1655. A descendant of this line is John Crouch."
Our Garrett Crouch family of San Augustine and Nacogdoches counties have family ties in Davidson and Williamson counties in Tennessee making it possible that we are related. We would be pleased to hear from anyone related to the above.
