Descendants of Richard Crouch

Goochland County, Va.

To: Index Contact: Joe Crouch

John Crouch 2 (Richard1) was born circa 1740 in Goochland County, Virginia to Richard and Judith (Sampson) Crouch, married Susannah Ellis [1], daughter of Thomas and Ann Ellis, before 29 November, 1764 [2]. John and Susannah stopped having children in 1776 and John's will is dated 28 December 1779 and was Probated 20th March 1780 at roughly 40 years of age.

Did John and Susannah Ellis stop having children due to age or did he enlist in the Revolutionary War? Did he die as a result of disease / military action? As both John and Susannah 'Ellis' Crouch were deceased by the time the 1818 Revolutionary Pension Act there would not have been a Pension Application filled out.

Note: Neither of the two listings for John Crouch of Virginia in the Revolutionary War Pension Application Index are our ancestor. One can be eliminated through the DAR Patriot Index. He married Jusieth Wiggins, and died in 1828. The other application was a John Crouch of Fairfax County, Virginia who entered into service as a Private in 1781, after the death of the John Crouch on this biographical sketch.

His last will and testament [3] dated 28 December 1779 and Pro 20 March 1780 [9] reads:

'In the Name of God amen, I John Crouch of Goochland County being very sick of body, but of a sound and perfect memory do make & ordain this my last will and Testament in manner and form following.

I love God and bequeath my Soul to Almighty God who gave it me and my Body to the Ground from whence it came to be buried at the discretion of my Executors here after mentioned. Item I leave to my loving wife Susannah my whole personal Estate of all kinds during her Life & after her death this said Estate to be equally divided among my seven children or them that survive that Age. Also I leave my Land to my said Wife Susannah during her natural Life & at her death to be sold by my Executers and the money equally divided amongst my children then living or Lawfully begotten of their body. I also appoint my Loving Wife Susannah my Executrix and Thomas Ellis, Richard Crouch (probably John's older brother)., my whole and sole Executors of my whole Estate as Witness Our hands and seals this twenty eight day of December 1799.

Their children [4] [6] were as follows:

1. William Crouch 3 born November 15, 1762, married Sally Downs Radford in Goochland on 17 {5} November 1789 William Crouch b 15 Nov 1762, Goochland Co VA; d (before 15 Oct 1832 the date of his inventory), Goochland Co; m 24 Nov 1789, Goochland Co, Sally Downer / Downs Redford. Sally Redford b 08 Dec 1767, William Crouch served in the Revolutionary War & applied for a pension 1829, Goochland Co VA.

2. Sarah Crouch 3 born 29 November 1764, chr. 23 Dec 1764. Marrage bond 08 Aug 1789, m 09 Aug 1789, Goochland Co VA, Stephen Woodson with Surety/Witness William Johnson. Baptized 23 Dec 1764 Douglas Register-181 p.69

3. Susannah 3 Crouch born 25 September 1766, chr. 11 Jan 1767 Douglas Register-181 p.75/. This seems to be the Susanna Crouch who married David Nowlin. A marriage bond was issued to Susanna Crouch & David Nowlin on December 19, 1800 with Surety being Stephen Woodson (a Stephen Woodson was this Susannah Crouch's brother-in-law, husband of Sarah Crouch). They were married on December 20, 1800 by Rev. Charles Hopkins. Neither Richard or Stephen, brothers of this John Crouch had a daughter named Susanna. Seems probable as the marriage occurred roughly one year after Susannah Crouch Sr. and her children conveyed 50 acres of land to a David Nowlin. This David Nowlin is probably the same one as was born ABT. 1752 in Goochland County, Va. (a son of the David Nowlin born Abt 1730 and died Jan. 1777 in St. James Northam Parrish, Goochland, Co. VA.) and was probabley his second wife given the roughly 15 years difference in age and the fact that there's a October 17, 1984 Goochland County marriage bond for David Nowlin to Ann Powell; sec. Daniel Arton. William Powell conssents to Dau's m'ge.

4. John Crouch 3 born ______ 1767; died December 14, 1813, Franklin, Williamson Co TN; married October 20,1794, Pittsylvania Co. VA, Susannah Williams. [8]

5. Harding / Hardin Crouch 3 (a son) born 16 June 1772, [7] Goochland Co VA, baptized August 16, 1772; died ca1845, Montgomery Co TN; married Dorothy Murray.

6. Richard Crouch 3 born 23 March 1774, chr. 12 June 1774 /DR-181 p.96. Married Martha Britt in Goochland Co. Virginia on 10 Dec 1812. Martha Britt was the daughter of William Britt Jr. (1763-1817 m-1784) and Sarah Poor (b. 20 Feb 1761)

7. Stephen Crouch 3 born 29 November 1776., d . Stephen Crouch d/o John & Susannah (Ellis) Crouch. 13 Apr 1777 Stephen Crouch baptized. Stephen Crouch also referred to as Stephen Crouch Jr. (probably because of same name of older men?). /DR-181 p.101 According to Mrs. L.M. Crouch Jr.. Is this Stephen Crouch the same who was witness to the marriages listed below for [10] ?? Is this the Stephen Crouch who married "Mary S."?[11]
