Charles William Crouch 4 (John 3, John 2, Richard 1) was born 12 September 1806, Pittsylvania County, Virginia; died 6 January 1871, Kaufman Co., TX. [9][10]; married (1) Lucretia Nash, 6 June 1827, Williamson Co., TN. Lucretia was born 1815-20; died before Nov 1844 (2) Martha A. If reported marriage years are correct, then Lucretia was likely the mother of John, William and Elizabeth and Martha the mother of Lucretia and Martha.
Charles appears in San Augustine Co., TX on the 1840 census taxed for 1 poll, 4 slaves and one wood clock.[3] In the scholastic census of Texas in 1854,[4] C.W. Crouch is in San Augustine Co. with four children between 6-16 who attend school. In 1850 they were still in San Augustine County, TX. [5] This family was in Kaufman Co., TX by 1860. There is a William W. Crouch, born TN, age 21 in the 1870 household.[5] This appears to be the son of Charles' deceased brother, John. Additionally, there is a John Crouch, age 9, born TX and Mary Crouch, age 11, born TX, listed in the Hardin Moore household, 13 doors away.

[6] Among family notes the following information was found:
"Crouch, Charles W. shown as administrator to estate of John E. Crouch, 2 November 1852 Nacogdoches County."From the "History of Kaufman County, Vol. 11, published 1983 by the Kaufman County Historical Commission at Kemp, Texas, we learned that:
"John Crouch, born 1767, married Susannah Williams in 1794 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. One of their sons, Charles William Crouch, was born 12 Sept. 1806 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Evidence shows that John and Susannah moved their family to Williamson County, Tennessee between 1810-1813. John Crouch died in Franklin (Williamson) Tennessee on December 14, 1813. Susannah Williams married again on May 6, 1823, to Ephriarn Brown. She died the 23rd of February 1845 in Williamson County. Charles William Crouch married Lucretia/Lucressey Nash on June 6, 1827, according to marriage bonds on file in Williamson County, Tennessee. In 1840 we find C.W. and Lucretia in San Agustine County, Texas. In 1844 C.W. Crouch is married to Martha A. Smith and married again in 1849 to Amanda Norwood. In 1860 C.W. Crouch is living in Kaufman County. No wife is listed in this family."
This information was compiled by John P. Bailey of Gainesville, Texas.
We are thankful for the efforts expended in this search for Crouch beginnings in this country. Mr. Bailey's article began "Crouch is an English name. The caucasian Crouches came to Virginia in the 1600's. These following family memebers are original Crouches in the U.S.. William Crouch came to the colonies in 1637, Nicholas and another William Crouch came in 1650. Another Robert Crouch arrived in 1654, and Richard Crouch arrived in 1655. A descendant of this line is John Crouch."
Our Garrett Crouch family of San Augustine and Nacogdoches counties have family ties in Davidson and Williamson counties in Tennessee making it possible that we are related. We would be pleased to hear from anyone related to the above.

Louisa A. Temple was born in TN on 10 Jun 1806. According to family records she grew up near Franklin, Williamson Co TN, the daughter of Burwell Temple and Polly Simmons Adkins. Nothing is known about her childhood or education, just that she grew up near the Franklin TN area and that she could read and write.21 Sep 1826 in Williamson Co TN she married William Nash and in 1830 Louisa and William are enumerated with 1 son under age 5 on the Williamson Co TN Census. In 1834, with William's brother John and his sister Lucretia Crouch and her family, the couple brought their children to Texas, settling first in what is now the eastern portion of San Augustine Co. They had with them 8 slaves at that time. Not long after arriving in Texas William and his brother John were caught up in the revolution against Mexico and left their new homes to fight, leaving Louisa at home with her children. Louisa would find throughout her marriage with William that he was gone a good deal of time on business and other matters.
Louisa gave birth to 11 known children in her life. Oddly, only 2 of them out-lived her, with 5 of her 6 sons dying before the age of 45, and 4 of her 5 daughters dying before the age of 40. And her husband was killed by a disgruntled former slave when he was only 56 years of age.
Zach encouraged others to move to Runnels County. Charles W Crouch, another early Kaufman Co TX pioneer and his sister Mary's father-in-law, went to stay with Zach in the fall of 1881. Crouch's health was failing and they felt the change in climate would benefit him. However, he died there 19 Dec 1881. It was Zach who notified the family and newspapers in Kaufman County of Crouch's death.
Z W Moore died 27 Mar 1884 in Runnels County. Research has shown he is not buried there, and as it is with many members of this family, it is not known where his remains are interred.
