Hargis Origins

The Hargis family originated in Denmark.  One member of the family departed to Normandy, France, where the name became Harguess.  Then Louis and Louise Harguess immigrated to England, where surnames became Harges and Hargase.  Here is the Hargis family coat of arms:

Notes on the Hargase Family of England:

George Hargase II brought his family to Virginia about 1642.  His sons, William and Thomas, moved to Charles County, Maryland, where they owned and operated a plantation called Hargis Hope.  It would also appear that they began spelling the name Hargis.

Notes on the Hargises in Maryland, Virginia, and Kentucky:

I’ve gotten this information from a source that seems informed, yet some of the info on John Hargis’s and Elizabeth Freelove’s children struck me as suspect, such as one child was listed as having been born eleven years after John’s death.  That said, I removed that child from the list, but left the rest, although I also find it unusual that each of them is born in a different place.  The fact is, there were an enormous number of Hargises in the Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky area in the 1700’s and 1800’s and many of them named their sons John, Thomas, and Samuel, so it’s very difficult to follow the trail.  I’m entirely unsure if the above info holds water, but I’m going with it until I find evidence otherwise, and I do feel very confident that the line from Samuel Whiteside Hargis forward is correct.  I also feel fairly confident that our Hargis line originated in England with George Hargase, as he has a tremendous number of descendants and is the only Hargis I have found immigrating.

Notes on the Hargis/Weddington family:

It bears noting that during the 1800’s, there were two men named Jacob Weddington Hargis in Rowan County, Kentucky.  The first was born in 1826 and went on to become a prominent attorney, the second was born in 1836 and was a farmer.  Ours was the farmer.  It so happens that both men had mothers whose maiden names were Weddington, but so far as I can tell, they are of a different line of Hargises entirely and a different line of Weddingtons entirely, whose lines likely meet a generation or two back, but were not closely related.  To make matters even more confusing, both Jacob Weddington Hargises died in 1915.  However, using the Hargis Family Bible and census records from the period, as well as the work of other genealogists, I feel confident my information is correct.

It’s also worth mentioning that around 1860, Rowan County, Kentucky was created from portions of Elliott and Morgan Counties, Kentucky.  So it may be that mentions of these places are somewhat synonymous.

One record puts the marriage of Thomas Hargis and Jane Weddington at June 27, 1833, which would fit with the birth of their first child a year later.

Jane Weddington’s brother, Jacob Weddington, Jr. served in the Civil War, in the Kentucky Mounted Infantry.  He died in Ashland, Kentucky near the end of the war from “a disease called dropsy, contracted while in line of duty in the service of the United States.”

It would appear that Jacob Hargis, husband to Isouria and father to Samuel, had a previous marriage.  One report states that this is the case, and that two children, Mary T. Hargis (b. 1862) and Nancy Hargis (b.1864), resulted.  Also, in the 1880 census for Elliott County, Kentucky, Jacob is listed as having a daughter, Maggie, only five years younger than wife Isouria.  The 1880 census also shows that Jacob’s younger brother James was living with his family.

Isouria’s name may have also been referred to as Isoura, Issoura, Isouri, Missouri, and/or Suerie.  Strangely enough, two marriage records exist, of for Jacob Hargis and Missouri F. McGraw on November 24, 1876 and another for Jacob Hargis and Suerie McGraw on March 26, 1876.  Considering the similarities of name and date, I tend to think this might be the same marriage listed with different dates.  In the 1880 Elliott County, Kentucky census, she is listed as Isouri.

Weddington Origins

Weddington was originally spelled "Waddington".  It is of ancient Scotch origin; however, many of the family moved from Ireland and Scotland into England to escape social pressures.  The name came from the celtic word "Wadding", meaning to join, and "tone or ton" which is defined as a low hill or mountain; hence the name signifies the joining of mountains, or more simply, "A Valley."  The motto of the family, as shown on its Coat of Arms, is "Semper Paratum" (Always Ready).

Notes on the John McGraw family:

One sources says John V. McGraw had sisters named Amy, Martha, Mary Ann, and Catherine and that by 1860, they were all living with a family in Kentucky, without their parents.  I have also run across some discrepancies in John’s middle name.  One source says it’s Viney and another says it’s Joseph.

As stated above, Isouria’s name may have also been referred to as Isoura, Issoura, Isouri, Missouri, and/or Suerie.

Records indicate that most Irish McGraws were McGraths, Magraths, McCraiths, or McCragh before leaving Ireland.

McGraw/McGrath Origins

McGrath and its many variants (McGraw, Magraw, MacGraw, Magrath, MacGrath, Magra, McCraith, MacCraith, McCragh) comes from the Irish name Mac Raith, which comes from the personal name Rath, meaning “grace” or “prosperity.”  The Mc or Mac in front of an Irish name generally means “son of.”  Two native Irish families originally adopted the name MacGrath.  Here is the McGraw/McGrath family coat of arms:

Castle Mcgrath, dating from the 16th century, stands in the ancient market town of Pettigo, not far from Donegal, in County Fermanagh:

Notes on the John Johnson and Peter Johnson families:

John Johnson was a farmer.  In 1850, his real estate value was $300, and by 1860, his real estate valued $400 and his personal value was $227.

The 1850 Breathitt County, Kentucky census lists another son, Benjamin, 6 months old, who does not appear on the 1860 census.  It could be that Benjamin and Joseph Johnson are the same person, perhaps going by a middle name in 1860, or it could be that that Benjamin died and Joseph’s age is a little off in the 1860 census, a problem I’ve found to be pretty common.

There is a discrepancy in Peter Johnson’s date of birth and date of death.  Generally, sources say he was born in 1848, but his tombstone says 1843.  As for his date of death, the family Bible say 1916, but his tombstone says 1917.

Notes on the Levi Wheeler Cline family:

It so happens that there were several Levi Wheeler Clines around the Carter/Rowan/Elliott Counties area in the 1800s, and although I feel there must be a connection between them all, so far I cannot connect Levi Cline born 1826 with the others.

Lydia Manley had a previous marriage that produced at least five children, all of which whom lived with Levi and Lydia’s family for a time:  P.O. “Pad” Collins, Caroline Collins Brammer, Lucy Myers Collins Gilbert (born abt 1842), Paulina Collins Goodpaster (born abt 1844), and Josiah W. Collins (born abt 1846.)  Their father was J. Bohannon Collins.

Levi Wheeler Cline and Lydia Manley Collins Cline were living with daughter Mary Frances and her husband Peter Johnson by 1880.

Notes on the Cline and Johnson families:

Mary Frances Cline Johnson and husband Peter Johnson are buried in the Haywood Cemetery in Elliott County, Kentucky, not far from Lawton, Kentucky.  Also there are both sets of their parents, John and Margaret Johnson and Levi and Lydia Cline.  Additionally, some of Peter and Mary Frances’s children are buried there:  Caroline Johnson Tackett, James Harlan Johnson, and Richard C. Johnson with his wife Mary Ann.

Notes on the Hale and Gearheart Families:

Peter Hale and Sarah Morris may have had some additional children born prior to those listed.

Sarah Sizemore, wife of Margaret Gearheart’s brother, Peter Gearheart, is the great granddaughter of George “All” Sizemore and Agnes Cornett/Sheperd.  George “All” Sizemore is distantly related to an entirely different line of my family listed elsewhere on this site, the Blevins of North Carolina.  Although this is not completely clear, I believe George “All” is likely cousin to my Blevins ancestor George Edward Sizemore and nephew to my Blevins ancestor Edward “Ned” Sizemore.  For more on this line, see the Blevins area.

Furthermore, Lewis Sizemore, who is Sarah Sizemore’s father, married Catherine Gearheart.  Catherine is the granddaughter of Adam Gearheart and Margaret Justice in my direct line.

There is some discrepancy about some of the names and ages of Adam and Margaret Gearheart’s other children besides William.

Notes on the Samuel Hargis family:

Grace Hargis and her husband Bill Helton reside in New Brunswick, Ohio.

Jesse Hargis was killed in a log mill accident.

Walter Gobel Hargis was killed in World War II.

Luster McKee Hargis was also killed in World War II, and he lied about his age to get into the service.

Lloyd Henry Hargis was killed in a mining accident.  After finishing work for the day, he returned to the mine to turn off a light, and was killed by falling rocks.

Estelle Hargis’s husband, Paul Jones, and Evelyn Jane’s husband, Harold Goodpastor are both ministers.  For many years, Jane and Harold resided in Nitro, West Virginia.

It may bear noting that my grandmother, Mary Hargis, was always told that the Hargis family was involved in the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys, which sounds plausible, since I understand the feud involved many other families and took place not far from the Rowan County area, in the counties bordering Kentucky and West Virginia.  Records also show a number of lesser feuds took place in the area, one in particular referred to as the Hargis-Marcum feud in Breathitt County.  I can’t find record of any Hargises in my line taking part in these feuds, but it’s still interesting to consider.

Notes on the Mary Hargis Blevins family:

My grandmother, Mary Hargis Blevins, grew up in Rowan County, Kentucky, on a farm, where she was the ninth of fourteen children.  According to my mother, Rita Blevins Brewsaugh, the farm was so rural that Mary’s family only went “to town,” which would have been Morehead, a couple of times a year.  They also didn’t attend school regularly.

Around 1940, Mary was visiting her sister, Isouria “Frances”, who had moved to downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.  Mary and some of her sisters often sang together, (songs of the period, one example she once mentioned was “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,”) so one day and she and Frances came upon a man with a guitar in a schoolyard, and they began singing while he played.  A crowd gathered to listen, and when the crowd dispersed, a young man on a bike remained, and he asked Mary to go for a ride on the handlebars.  She accepted, and later married him – Charles Blevins.

Mary and Charles lived in Cincinnati until 1950, when they moved to northern Kentucky, just across the Ohio River.  They returned to Cincinnati once again, but settled back in Kentucky for good in 1954.  While in Cincinnati, they resided in several parts of town:  Avondale, downtown, and on Colerain Avenue on the West Side.  In Kentucky, they lived in a then-rural part of Erlanger in Kenton County, on Turkeyfoot Road.

Their fourth child, Harold Garrett, was born premature and died.  They also had a first baby before Rita who died, premature.

Mary held many jobs throughout her life, and worked very hard at anything she did.  She put her children and grandchildren first in all things.  She used a great deal of Appalachian dialect in her speech and she had a wonderful sense of humor.  She died of lung cancer.

In 1975, Mary and Charles moved to Williamstown, Grant County, Kentucky, where daughter Rita and her husband Talc had relocated a couple of years earlier.  Mary and Charles are buried together in the Williamstown Cemetery.

Rita Blevins and Talc Brewsaugh moved to Grant County, Kentucky in 1972 and still reside there.  In addition to being a truck driver and welder, Talc has worked primarily in construction, for awhile owning his own business, and is very good at his trade.  Their daughter, Toni Brewsaugh Herzog (me), is a novelist.  She and her husband Blair live in Kenton County, Kentucky.

Billie Blevins gave her twins, Lisa and Leslie, up for adoption, as well as her daughter April.  Billie died very young, of pneumonia and is buried in the Williamstown Cemetery, Grant County, Kentucky.  Her infant son, Eric Alan, is buried there, as well.  Billie’s daughters, Lisa and Leslie were raised in Ashland, Kentucky.  Lisa’s husband Tony was killed in an auto accident.  Billie’s daughter, April was raised in Pendleton County, Kentucky.  Billie’s daughter, Angi, resides with her family in Grant County, Kentucky and she is an account executive for a human resources firm.

Debbie Blevins’ second child, Shaun, died of crib death.  Debbie’s family resided in Independence, Kenton County, Kentucky while her children were growing up.  She and Rick divorced in 1991.  Debbie is now a real estate agent.

Pam Blevins’ family resided in Grant County, Kentucky for many years.  In 2002, she and Larry divorced.  Her son, Bo Ryan, is in the U.S. Marine Corp.
