Hargis Origins
The Hargis family originated in Denmark. One member of the family departed to
Normandy, France, where the name became Harguess. Then Louis and Louise Harguess immigrated to England, where
surnames became Harges and Hargase.
Here is the Hargis family coat of arms:

Notes on the Hargase Family of
England:
George Hargase II
brought his family to Virginia about 1642.
His sons, William and Thomas, moved to Charles County, Maryland, where
they owned and operated a plantation called Hargis Hope. It would also appear that they began
spelling the name Hargis.

Notes on the Hargises in Maryland,
Virginia, and Kentucky:
Ive gotten this
information from a source that seems informed, yet some of the info on John
Hargiss and Elizabeth Freeloves children struck me as suspect, such as one
child was listed as having been born eleven years after Johns death. That said, I removed that child from the
list, but left the rest, although I also find it unusual that each of them is
born in a different place. The fact is,
there were an enormous number of Hargises in the Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky
area in the 1700s and 1800s and many of them named their sons John, Thomas,
and Samuel, so its very difficult to follow the trail. Im entirely unsure if the above info holds
water, but Im going with it until I find evidence otherwise, and I do feel
very confident that the line from Samuel Whiteside Hargis forward is
correct. I also feel fairly confident
that our Hargis line originated in England with George Hargase, as he has a
tremendous number of descendants and is the only Hargis I have found immigrating.

Notes on the Hargis/Weddington
family:
It bears noting
that during the 1800s, there were two men named Jacob Weddington Hargis in
Rowan County, Kentucky. The first was
born in 1826 and went on to become a prominent attorney, the second was born in
1836 and was a farmer. Ours was the
farmer. It so happens that both men had
mothers whose maiden names were Weddington, but so far as I can tell, they are
of a different line of Hargises entirely and a different line of Weddingtons
entirely, whose lines likely meet a generation or two back, but were not
closely related. To make matters even
more confusing, both Jacob Weddington Hargises died in 1915. However, using the Hargis Family Bible and
census records from the period, as well as the work of other genealogists, I
feel confident my information is correct.
Its also worth
mentioning that around 1860, Rowan County, Kentucky was created from portions
of Elliott and Morgan Counties, Kentucky.
So it may be that mentions of these places are somewhat synonymous.
One record puts the
marriage of Thomas Hargis and Jane Weddington at June 27, 1833, which would fit
with the birth of their first child a year later.
Jane Weddingtons
brother, Jacob Weddington, Jr. served in the Civil War, in the Kentucky Mounted
Infantry. He died in Ashland, Kentucky
near the end of the war from a disease called dropsy, contracted while in line
of duty in the service of the United States.
It would appear
that Jacob Hargis, husband to Isouria and father to Samuel, had a previous
marriage. One report states that this
is the case, and that two children, Mary T. Hargis (b. 1862) and Nancy Hargis
(b.1864), resulted. Also, in the 1880
census for Elliott County, Kentucky, Jacob is listed as having a daughter,
Maggie, only five years younger than wife Isouria. The 1880 census also shows that Jacobs younger brother James was
living with his family.
Isourias name may
have also been referred to as Isoura, Issoura, Isouri, Missouri, and/or
Suerie. Strangely enough, two marriage
records exist, of for Jacob Hargis and Missouri F. McGraw on November 24, 1876
and another for Jacob Hargis and Suerie McGraw on March 26, 1876. Considering the similarities of name and
date, I tend to think this might be the same marriage listed with different
dates. In the 1880 Elliott County,
Kentucky census, she is listed as Isouri.

Weddington Origins
Weddington was originally spelled
"Waddington". It is of
ancient Scotch origin; however, many of the family moved from Ireland and
Scotland into England to escape social pressures. The name came from the celtic word "Wadding", meaning
to join, and "tone or ton" which is defined as a low hill or
mountain; hence the name signifies the joining of mountains, or more simply,
"A Valley." The motto of the
family, as shown on its Coat of Arms, is "Semper Paratum" (Always
Ready).

Notes on the John McGraw family:
One sources says
John V. McGraw had sisters named Amy, Martha, Mary Ann, and Catherine and that
by 1860, they were all living with a family in Kentucky, without their
parents. I have also run across some
discrepancies in Johns middle name.
One source says its Viney and another says its Joseph.
As stated above,
Isourias name may have also been referred to as Isoura, Issoura, Isouri,
Missouri, and/or Suerie. Strangely
enough, two marriage records exist, of for Jacob Hargis and Missouri F. McGraw
on November 24, 1876 and another for Jacob Hargis and Suerie McGraw on March
26, 1876. Considering the similarities
of name and date, I tend to think this might be the same marriage listed with
different dates.
Records indicate
that most Irish McGraws were McGraths, Magraths, McCraiths, or McCragh before
leaving Ireland.

McGraw/McGrath Origins
McGrath and its many variants (McGraw, Magraw,
MacGraw, Magrath, MacGrath, Magra, McCraith, MacCraith, McCragh) comes from the
Irish name Mac Raith, which comes from the personal name Rath, meaning grace
or prosperity. The Mc or Mac in front
of an Irish name generally means son of.
Two native Irish families originally adopted the name MacGrath. Here is the McGraw/McGrath family coat of
arms:

Castle Mcgrath, dating from the 16th century,
stands in the ancient market town of Pettigo, not far from Donegal, in County
Fermanagh:

Notes on the John Johnson and
Peter Johnson families:
John Johnson was a
farmer. In 1850, his real estate value
was $300, and by 1860, his real estate valued $400 and his personal value was
$227.
The 1850 Breathitt
County, Kentucky census lists another son, Benjamin, 6 months old, who does not
appear on the 1860 census. It could be
that Benjamin and Joseph Johnson are the same person, perhaps going by a middle
name in 1860, or it could be that that Benjamin died and Josephs age is a
little off in the 1860 census, a problem Ive found to be pretty common.
There is a
discrepancy in Peter Johnsons date of birth and date of death. Generally, sources say he was born in 1848,
but his tombstone says 1843. As for his
date of death, the family Bible say 1916, but his tombstone says 1917.
Notes on the Levi Wheeler
Cline family:
It so happens that
there were several Levi Wheeler Clines around the Carter/Rowan/Elliott Counties
area in the 1800s, and although I feel there must be a connection between them
all, so far I cannot connect Levi Cline born 1826 with the others.
Lydia Manley had a
previous marriage that produced at least five children, all of which whom lived
with Levi and Lydias family for a time:
P.O. Pad Collins, Caroline Collins Brammer, Lucy Myers Collins Gilbert
(born abt 1842), Paulina Collins Goodpaster (born abt 1844), and Josiah W.
Collins (born abt 1846.) Their father
was J. Bohannon Collins.
Levi Wheeler Cline
and Lydia Manley Collins Cline were living with daughter Mary Frances and her
husband Peter Johnson by 1880.
Notes on the Cline and Johnson
families:
Mary Frances Cline Johnson
and husband Peter Johnson are buried in the Haywood Cemetery in Elliott County,
Kentucky, not far from Lawton, Kentucky.
Also there are both sets of their parents, John and Margaret Johnson and
Levi and Lydia Cline. Additionally,
some of Peter and Mary Francess children are buried there: Caroline Johnson Tackett, James Harlan
Johnson, and Richard C. Johnson with his wife Mary Ann.
