Possible Brewsaugh Origin
My family has always
thought/assumed/heard that the Brewsaugh name originated in France. Corresponding with other Brewsaugh
genealogists revealed a story which may or may not be true, although I have
heard it from at least two unrelated sources.
The tale is as follows:
During the French
Revolution, the family was one of many who went against Louis XVI. Failing to carry out their mission, they
escaped capture and death by heading to America. The king then sent men to America to find the family, who created
a new French name Breusaux or Breauseaux to escape detection. Im also told
that no records of any Brewsaugh in the U.S. are dated before 1793, which fits
the above scenario. Whether or not the
Brewsaughs were really sought by the king, however, I figure a bloody
revolution seems a likely occurrence to send a family fleeing across an ocean :
)
Recently, an additional
theory about the origins of the Brewsaugh family the U.S. has come from one
Brewsaugh researcher. To touch on it
briefly, the earliest known Brewsaugh in our line, Charles Brusaw may have been
Acadian, from Nova Scotia, with the original name being Broussard. These Broussards battled the English and
were eventually pushed off their land and deported to various locations before
eventually reuniting in Louisiana around 1765.
Incidentally, Charles is a name frequently used by the Broussards.
Charles Brusaw resided
in Bourbon County, Kentucky, then later in Harrison County, Kentucky. The name has gone through several spellings
and I have followed the spelling choices of each particular person.

Notes on Charles and Margaret
Brusaughs family:
Charles Brusaugh first appeared in 1804 as Charles Bruzaw on a Bourbon
County, Kentucky tax list. There was also
a Charles Brazaw on the 1793 Bourbon County tax list which is likely the same
person. It is believed by Brewsaugh
researchers that Charles original surname was probably Brousseau, Bourrassa,
or Broussard. Charles moved his family
to Harrison County, Kentucky sometime in around 1821, as they appear on the
1821 tax list. It is believed he died
soon after as Peggy appears on the 1822 tax list without him.
In May 1841, Margaret appeared before the court in Harrison County to
show cause why Rachel and Emily, infant daughters of her son James, should not
be bound out. In 1842, James appeared
before the court for the same purpose.
In 1847, James appeared before the court to show cause why his son Jesse
should not be bound out, however, the court ruled that Jesse would be bound as
an apprentice to Adam Juett until he turned 21 years of age. It appears that James wife Mildred may have
deserted him.
Charles and Margaret may have had an additional daughter named
Mildred. What is known is that Mildred
had five children by William Eskridge:
George, Frances, Rebecca, William, and Salinda. These children sometimes used the name
Brusaw, other times Eskridge. However,
instead of being a daughter to Charles and Margaret, this might have been
Mildred Bryan Brusaw, who married James and appeared to desert him and their
children. For now, Im leaning that way
and not listing her as one of Charles children.
Margarets will, written on October 6, 1842 and probated November 16,
1842 made the following provisions: To
Richard B. my 25 acres, to James - $1, to Burton $1, to Margaret $1.
Richard and his wife Elizabeth could not read or write, and around 1850
they resided with brother Burton and his family as farm hands. Burton resided in Cynthiana and in 1860; his
real estate was valued at $85 and his personal value at $16.
Daughter Margarets maiden name on her marriage certificate appeared as
Bressou.
Johns son, Alexander Brusaw, was a tanner by trade. He drowned.
One sources shows a different marriage for Burtons daughter Mary, to
Jacob M. Evans, on January 7, 1869. It
is possible she had two marriages, but I dont have anything to back this up.
There is a discrepancy in Burton Brusaw, Jr.s wife, Sallys maiden
name. One source says Lawinson, another
Lemmon.

Notes on the Ashbrook family:
1st generation:
John Ashbrook arrived in the U.S. on December 9, 1682 on the Antelope of
Belfast, sailing from Ireland. He
settled in Deptford Precinct, Gloucester County, New Jersey, where he was a
planter, member of the Provincial Legislature, and high sheriff of Gloucester
County. Although he sailed from
Ireland, one family history indicates the Ashbrooks came from Dunham, England
and that there is still an ancestral estate there owned and occupied by
Ashbrook descendants.
2nd generation:
Johns son, Aaron migrated with several Scotch-Irish families from New
Jersey to Virginia (present day Hampshire County, West Virginia) in about 1743.
3rd generation:
Aarons son John was killed when thrown from a horse.
Aarons son Thomas immigrated to Washington County, Pennyslvania, had
two sons, and was killed by Indians.
Aarons son James immigrated to Washington County, Pennsylvania and was
a noted lawyer.
Aarons son Aaron was granted a 400 acre plantation originally willed
from his father to his brother, John, after John was killed. In 1786, he moved his family to Redstone Old
Fort, Pennsylvania, and in 1788 to Bourbon County, Kentucky, where he purchased
a tract of land on Hustons Fork, a branch of the Licking River.
Aarons son Moses moved to Tennessee.
Aarons son Levi served during the American Revolution in Hampshire
County, Virginia and was a Baptist preacher.
He is buried near Romney on what is still know as the Ashbrook plains.
4th generation:
Aaron Ashbrook was killed in the Revolutionary War; his date of enlistment
was January 23, 1777.
Thomas Ashbrook served in the Revolutionary war for one year in 1781 -
82, and was at the battle of Yorktown.
IN 1786, he moved to Redstone Old Fort, Pennsylvania. In 1788, he moved to Bourbon County,
Kentucky. In 1803, he moved to Harrison
County, Kentucky. In 1821, he moved to
Nicholas County, Kentucky. In 1824, he
moved to Old Chilecothe, Ohio. And in 1848,
he moved to Owen County, Washington Township, Indiana, where he died.
5th/6th generation:
Aaron Ashbrook and Sally Monson had several more daughters, but there is
no information on them. It is also
known Aaron had several more children with Rachel Scott.
Felix Grundy Ashbrook took his family from Bourbon County to Harrison County
in 1804, and live on a farm on Indian Creek until 1821 when they moved to a
farm on Mill Creek near Cynthiana.
Felixs children, Aaron and Cassandra married brother and sister.

Notes on the Million Family:
Harrison County, Kentucky records show the following references.
Hamon Million had some sort of legal career, and was possibly a
lawyer. He took many poor people into
his home for months or years at a time.
Records show one couple living with his family for 3 years and also that
he took in a freed slave named Betty.
He and Judith had six boys and two girls, but I have only found
information on George.
George Million and his wife Sarah resided in Colemansville in Harrison
County and they farmed for a living. In
1860, the value of their real estate was $2,500 and their personal value was
$4,350. By 1870, those amounts had
risen to $3,500 and $6,930 respectively.
Judith Hinson and Hamon Million are buried in the Million cemetery on
his farm on Edwards Lane, north of Raven Creek, in Harrison County.
Notes on the Hinson Family:
There is a discrepancy in the spelling of the name Hinson/Henson. Names are listed as they appeared most
commonly in records.
The Hinsons/Hensons are said to be of English-Scotch origin.
Elizabeth and her husband, William Cole, settled in Indiana.
George Henson, Jr. made thirteen flatboat trips to New Orleans in his youth,
returning on horseback. In 1794, he
relocated to Harrison County, Kentucky, and in October 1835 to Lewis County,
Missouri. His death was caused by
falling and striking his head.
Sarah and her husband, David Hufford, settled in Scott County, Kentucky.
Judith and Gideon were twins.

Notes on the John T. Brewsaugh
Family:
John and Sophia are buried together in Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry,
Kentucky (Harrison County) beside their daughter Emma and an unnamed infant son
who died at birth on November 8, 1898.
Elzie and Walter are buried together under the same tombstone alongside
wives Anna and Mary, also in the Pythian Grove Cemetery. Anna died at age 33, Mary at 26. The unusual large brown tombstone is shaped
like pier posts with a scroll attached
to them by rope.
Walter relocated from Berry, Kentucky to Indiana where he remarried to
Emma Haufler. Emmas mother was named
Martha.
Evert and Cecilias son Kenneth died around age four; he was hit by a
car. They also had a stillborn son.
Evert and Cecilia divorced and Cecilia remarried Arthur Hainkel from
Middletown, Ohio. They adopted a baby
girl named Nancy in about 1944. Cecilia
had a brother named Sonny, who had at least three children: Nina, Bob, and Paul.
Notes on the Alton Eugene Brewsaugh
Family:
Alton moved north to the Covington, Kentucky/Cincinnati, Ohio area where
he met Dorothy (Dot). They divorced in
1954 and he remarried Bernie. Alton
worked at the Formica company for many years.
Alton and Dots youngest son, Barry, was hit by a drunk driver while
riding his bike and died at age seven.

Notes on the Caldwell family:
As of 1860, Milton Caldwell was a farmer and his sons were listed in the
census as farmhands.
Census records indicate various spellings of the name Barzilla: Barzillus and Brazilla. In one census, Barzilla, Sr. goes by
Barz. Later, both men go by B.B.
Barzilla Caldwell, Sr.s family lived in the area of Berrys Station in
Harrison County, and they had a laborer/boarder named W. Hutcheson, age 22, living with them in 1880. The 1910 census indicates they had six
children, all living, but I have only found five at this time.
Between 1890 and 1900, Hubert and Mary Caldwell had two children who
died. Marys name changes from census
to census from Maymie to Mamie to Mary.
Her daughter, Cecilia, referred to her as Mary.
In 1920, Cecilia and her husband Everett Brewsaugh were living with
Huberts family. Everett was a farmer
at this time.
By 1936, Cecilia was living in Covington, Kentucky with her second husband,
Arthur Hainkel. At this time, she
worked at The Mack Shirt Corporation on East Sixth Street in downtown
Cincinnati, just across the Ohio River.
Cecilia and Arthur later relocated to Middletown, Ohio.
Caldwell Origins
There has been a lot of research done on the Caldwell name, but many
people seem to find much of it suspect.
However, what seems fairly certain is that Caldwell is a Scottish name
which first appeared in Renfrewshire, and is said to mean cold well. Some legends say Caldwells were of Norse
origin before being taken as prisoners at the Battle of Largs, Scotland in
1263. Caldwells have been in Ayrshire,
Scotland since at least 1349 when William Caldwell was Lord Chancellor of
Scotland.
Below is the Scottish Caldwell family crest as well as photos of
Caldwell Castle in County Fermanagh, Ireland on Lake Erne. The castle, built in 1612, was purchased by
James Caldwell, a well-to-do merchant from Enniskellen, in 1662 and remained in
the family for about 200 years.
Apparently, the castle is currently in a state of disrepair; the first
picture shows one current view of the castle; the second shows the castle in
earlier times when it was well cared for.
