John E. Crouch 5 (Charles W. 4, John 3, John 2, Richard 1) was born c1833, TN.; died December 19, 1861 in Bentonville, AK.[3] ;married Mary Priscilla Moore[3], July 10, 1856, Kaufman Co., TX. She was born c1839, Red River County, Texas; died after 1861. Their children John and Mary Crouch lived with the Moore family in the1870 Census.[1][2]

1. Charles William Moore Crouch 6, born c1858, TX; in 1880 Charles is living alone in Terrrell and is owner of a Prop Shooting Gallery [3][4]

2. Mary Priscilla Crouch 6, born c1859, TX; married to Charles Madeley and residing in Milam Co TX..[3][4][5]

3. John Crouch 6, born c1861, TX; in 1880 John is living with Hardin T. Moore and married Lula Carrie Barnes in August 1880.[3][4] Died 1885 ?

Mary was born in Red River Co TX in 1839. In 1856, Kaufman Co TX, Mary married John E. Crouch, son of Charles W. Crouch & Lucretia Nash. John was born circa 1832 in TN. He came to Texas when only 3 years old.

During their short married life Mary & John had 3 children - Charles William Crouch born 1857, Mary Crouch born 1859 and John Crouch born 1861 -1885.

According to the 1860 census, John Crouch owned 2 slaves: a mulatto male age 24 and a mulatto female age 15.

When the Civil War started John Crouch joined Co A 6th TX Cavalry. He enlisted 10 Sep 1861, and he was killed 19 Dec 1861 at Bentonville, AR. Mary died in 1861 after the difficult birth of John Crouch Jr.

In the Kaufman County Probate Misc. Records, Vol.1, pg 226 is listed the "Estate of John E and Mary P Crouch, deceased" In it an Inventory of their assets is dated 19 Sep 1862 - the two slaves are named in the appraisal and their value appraised as: man, Jord - $2000.00; girl, Ardine -$1500.00.

It is not known where Mary Moore Crouch is buried. After Mary's death her brothers took her children into their homes. On the 1870 census Mary & John Crouch are living in Hardin Moore's household, and Charles Crouch is living in John G. Moore's household.

In 1880 John is living with Hardin T. Moore and John married Lula Carrie Barnes in August 1880. Charles is living alone in Terrrell and is owner of a Prop Shooting Gallery, and Mary is married to Charles Madeley and residing in Milam Co TX.

[6] John E. Crouch died Bentonville Arkansas on the December 21st, 1861 as according to his muster card.

6th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Wharton, Stone's)

6th Cavalry Regiment [also called 2nd Regiment] was organized with 1,150 men at Dallas, Texas, in September, 1861. Many of the men were from Dallas, McKinney, Waco, Austin, and Lancaster, and Bell County. The unit skirmished in the Indian Territory, fought at Elkhorn Tavern, then moved west of the Mississippi River. It contained 803 effectives in the spring of 1862 and was dismounted during the battles. Here the regiment reported 148 killed, wounded, or missing. Assigned to Ross' Brigade, it served with the Army of Tennessee during the Atlanta Campaign, was active in Tennessee, and ended the war in Mississippi attached to the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The field officers were Colonels Lawrence S. Ross, B. Warren Stone, and Jack Wharton; Lieutenant Colonels John S. Griffith and Peter F. Ross; and Robert M. White and Stephen B. Wilson.
