For a better aural experience, may I suggest that you use a pair of "mp3 style" earphones.   The stereo effects (in my opinion) are quite enjoyable.  Most computers have the 1/8" stereo socket for the commonly provided 1/8" plug on the earphones.

Included is a midi player which is a "freebie" distributed by Twelve-Tone Systems. Even though it is rather dated (1994), it does work in PC operating systems as far back as win95. It works well enough for you to be able to manipulate and play selectively standard MIDI files. Unfortunately, it is not possible to save the modified MIDI files.   You will have to decompress the file:
