Time line of the kings, Part II
11-27-99
In this second attempt to create a time line graph to show the reign of the kings in the Old Testaments I had to go to color in order to distinguish between kings. This time I tried to resolve all conflicts and make the graph appease all statements in I and II Kgs. I had about two statements that I could not appease, you can see them in red on the graph. With this new graph we are able to reduce our margin of error by plus or minus 2 years. So we have an acceptable margin of error of +/- 1 year. This continues to be for the reason given in part I. We have no way of knowing how they rounded their years.

As you can see by the graph some kings reigned in parallel even with our +/- 1 years margin of error. Also there continued to be anomalies with in the time line. The time between Baasha and Omri comes out to be about 2 years 9 months. This could possibly be a time period of Tibni. Tibni was defeated by the very same people that are keeping the time line or historical writings, so his time of reign my not have been properly recorded as being a reigning king in Israel.

The time between Amaziah and Uzziah shows a gap of 12 years. This is unexplainable, all we can say is there was no king in Judah at this time. Some could say, maybe Amaziah reigned for a longer period of time. This could be a valid point of view but one would be willing to alter the information that has been given to us. My goal is to make a graph that reflects Biblical time lines of the Scripture not to make the Scripture reflect a Biblical time line. So we must restrain ourselves from trying to alter what has been given to us.

The time gap between Jeroboam and Zachariah comes out to be about 24 years. Another anomaly would be between Pekah and Hoshea, comes out to be about 9 years. I try to explain this as possibly being the time of Hoshea's father. It may not have been customary to have a son be king over his father.

With this new graph I can say I am more satisfied with the results. So I also added in the time of the prophets. I must say it only represents the time of them speaking, it is not a lifeline. In most of the prophets, in the beginning of their writings it informs the reader of the kings that reigned as it was being written. That is the information the graphs of the prophets are based on.

The main reason I am more satisfied with this graph is because it shows Ahaz and Pekah's time of reign overlapping. As you can see in my first attempt to make a graph, the graph did not fall as showing Ahaz and Pekah's reign overlapping. If we followed the first graph it shows Pekah as being dead many years before Ahaz. This would have meant the whole section of Isaiah 7 could not have occurred. Due to the fact that YHVH Himself is depicted as speaking in Isaiah 7, I had to conclude in my first graph that it was incorrect. In your study you must always appease the actions and statements made by YHVH.

The passages that I used to create this graph were found by noticing main or common words with in statements in I and II Kgs that dealt with time. These main words would be "reigned" and "year of". I did word searches on these words. This allowed me to have a list of statements to create a time line or graph. Below you can find the search results. I did not filter the results for passages that only deal with making the graph so you might see some statements that have no relation to assisting us in building the time line.
