Comments:   Stumbled across the site and wow, what memories. Maybe some of you remember BUC Forde and UTC Oneil, both now deceased. NRS Thurso was probably the best duty station that any Group VIII (Seabee ratings) could ever ask for, and which are very few and far between.

I was there 68/69 as the station electrician (PW) Ended up being essentially "married" to the power plant. Retired from the canoe club in 78, now own a bait and tackle store enjoying life.

The best to old friends!

Where are you from?   Thurso, originally, but living in Utah now
Comments:   My dad, Jim, was first in Thurso in 64. He married my mom, Jane Angus, from Thurso, in 65 and I was born in 66. My whole family is in Thurso still (and here I am, a Highland lass stuck in a DESERT! How'd THAT happen?) So much of my childhood was spent going back and forth to Thurso--it was kind of home base for us. We always seemed to end up there when my dad was gone for long periods of time. I really, really miss Thurso and would love to hear from anyone who knew, knew of, remembers us. Also, I'm looking for Beth Berry. I met her when I was home in 85. Her husband, Wayne, was stationed there at the base. They have 2 sons, Eric and Scot. If anyone knows where they are please let me know.

Tom would have appreciated his contribution of painting the plaques. He spent a lot of time painting them and somehow I got drafted into cutting out and making the tartan backing. Ray White must have started that and then I got stuck with doing it.
Hope to see some of you at a reunion if it comes about.

Comments:   I was stationed at Derry in 76-77 and sent to Thurso to play in a Navy sponsored Golf Tournament in Wick in June of 76. Drove to Belfast, took a ferry to Stranraur and drove up through Scotland (Inverenss and Glasgow or Glasgow and Inverness and across Loch Ness. I remember it was cold and rainy and the Tournament play was miserable but I won something but I don't remember what. It probabably had to do with staying up drinking all night at a rock concert, just outside the base and on the shore of the ocean between you and Europe. I recall it never really got dark. Don't remember much of the base but we did eat and sleep there. I wanted to get stationed there when Derry closed but the Navy wanted me on a Destroyer really badly. Does anybody remember Jeff Killhullen from Phillidelpia who went to Thurso from Derry. I traveled back to the states with him through London and months later talked to him briefly S/S but he is another that I have lost track of. Love your site. Recognize some names too.

Most of you will remember me as 'RAY', one of the youngest guys to be stationed there (age 17). I can recall many of the names I see on this listing. I've been a Paramedic / Nurse for the last 30 years, I presently work for the Local VA Medical Center as a Psych Nurse. I plan to retire and return to Scotland to settle down, I think I was there in the UK longer than most anyone. Having first been a dependant (My Dad UTC Ed White , was stationed in Holy Loch back when the USS Proteus and USS Hunley were there and then In Londonderry, N. Ireland - before the troubles started ). I Joined the Navy in London, and was first stationed in Thurso for 66-68 tour of duty. Love this site, nice way to run into so many shipmates.

Comments:   Served 2 tours at Thurso: '63-'65 as RM1 and '69-'72 as RMC. NRS Thurso was by far the best duty station I ever had over 20 years. Seeing all these names and pictures on the site sure brought back great memories. My first tour there, when we were still putting the buildings together seems to me now like one giant party. Much too much drinking going on. Don't do that anymore. I used up all my moderation years ago. Here's one tidbit that might be of interest. The first EM club there was called the "22 club." This name was chosen because the 11 of us there at the time (July '63) put in $2 each to buy the beer. The club consisted of a 55 gallon drum with iced beer, a dartboard, and a card table in one of the cubicles in the main building. Here's some names I remember from that time:
Bill Sibley, Bob Lovall, Ted Ainsley, Billy Byers, Hagler, RMCM Bob Hayes, CSC Bill(?) Richardson, LCDR Waterloo, CWO Burwell, LT Morgan who had a big T-Bird he never washed. Later there was Marv Clamp and Stubby West who played in our first band. There are a lot of others too but I just can't think of them now.

Comments:   My hats off to you Steve. This is a great WEB site. My old entry probably went to log book heaven ... Thurso 2/70 to 6/74. I was an ETR2 at the end. Rose worked at the base for a short time in the ceramics department. We lived in Cliff Cottage and Mill Cottage Scrabster during that time. We were married in Thurso on 8/1/70. Steve, I remember you mostly from Merkle site. We were wondering ... what to do with Jim Humphries ... The "hump" was an intellectual .. different from the usual base crowd. I was an ET .. took over Bell's job doing test equipment calibration. Joe Jones took my place. Where is Joe?
Well, loved Thurso ... it's a part of our souls. Did you guys pull off the reunion in 2000?

Comments:   I was in Thurso from Jan 1 (great day to arrive, but then it was not my choice) 1969 until May of 1971. Two of my three sons were born right there in the hospital (Dunbar?). Use to live in a little cottage, #2, Scrabster Farm Cottage way back then before moving into Navy housing on JFK. I am a plankowner of the club when it opened - still have the stein, though have never used it. First time I walked into a store I saw this sign that said "No prams allowed". I made it in and out of that store and did not get caught with whatever a pram was (of course I learned what one was in short order). Anyway, I do miss it there as I considered it paradise even with the weather the way it is/was. I have my own set of bagpipes - not great with them, but it's fun anyway. I may have left Scotland, but I brought part of it with me.

I also remember Warren Milks and Bob Schissler. I was a Radioman at the base during those years. I worked on the transmitter deck, message center, control and at the receiver base at Murkle. Two that I meet quite often are Robert Bell And Jack Hausrath.( I think that is the correct spelling) Another who returned to the USA last year was George Henry who used to sing in the local clubs etc. I believe he was deported as he had never bothered getting British citizenship.  an interest in the reunion so I think something will transpire next summer but I haven't  clue as to what. It occurs to me that there might be a lot of pages confusing the issue. I wonder if we might integrate mine into yours or might you simply take over the task? What do you think? Here are a couple of names I don't think you have...they're from the '66-'70 period: SK3 Tony Nardone and ETN3 Richard "Skink" Linnell. Skink is now, unbelievably to those who knew (and liked him), a VP with IBM...or so I'm told. Regards, John Moore

My wife and I (Greta Walsh, from Northern Ireland) were married there, and our first child, Cathy, was born there. Love to see the messages posted on this site. Remember Jeannie Blunk, Chief Baumann (I helped coordinate his chief's initiation!) and some of the others. Please keep us posted as to any future reunions - we get back to England and Ireland nearly every year, and into parts of Scotland occasionally, though have only been back to Thurso once.

Comments: Actually, heard about the site from my daughter, Sheryl. Was very surprised such a site existed. Was stationed there 64-66. The "EM Club" in those days consisted of a small room next to the head with a couple of tables and benches and a refrigerator for the beer. Later, it was moved to what was originally the "day room". No bowling alley, chief's club, or commissary. The "Navy Exchange", such as it was, was contained in a 20 x 20' room in the original L-shaped building which also housed the galley, living quarters and personnel office. As a matter of interest, the original NRS emblem/plaque/logo was designed by RM3 Travis. The original call letters were NNJ, later changed to GXH. Some of the other plankowner names I remember which I didn't see listed are RMC Bauman (Chief LePage's predecessor), tech control chief, RM2 Bevis, RM2 Fleshman, RM2 Morton, RM3 Beauchard, RM3 Morris, YN1 Buckman, YN3 Charlie Hawk, Chief Kelso and Lt. Miller (XO).

He worked in the comm building on the left side of the base next to the antenna field. We lived out in base housing at 30 John Kennedy Drive. I recognize a couple of names on the NRS Thurso page, namely the Ogrodniks and Ian and Sheena Sinclair. I'm sure my parents would recognize a lot more people. I would really appreciate it if anyone has a way of getting hold of the two people I mentioned above. The sites are great - they bring back a lot of memories of a young boy who grew up there - and hopes to return soon. I am now in North Dakota with the Air Force, however my parents are retired down in sunny Florida. Would love to hear from anyone who was there or who might recognize my father's name. I remember Bill and Yvette Palmer(I think), he used to instruct me at karate (kenpo) although they stayed in Thurso. So if you are out there g'day. Happy New Year everybody!!

Comments:  Greetings. I was an ET at NRS Thurso from 66-68. Married Sybil Cowan who lived on Church St and  worked at Dounreay. Was a wrestler/coach with Jim Marshall--our lads from the tech college won nine of thirteen  national titles if I remember correctly. Do I understand correctly, from your time in Thurso and the fact that you  mention his name, that George Osterberger served at Thurso a second time? We roomed together in town for a while  and I ran into him briefly in the hilippines in '73. At any rate, great web site. I hope to have one up with its own  URL before the end of January and will link to yours if you agree. Regards, John & Sybil Moore

Comments: Hey, great to see yet another place where all the auld Thursa folks can meet. I was stationed in Thurso from 1965 to 1967 and from 1977 to 1979. I married a wonderful Thurso lass, Barbara Warlow from Wilson St in 1966. I've known the Budges (from the chip shop, SAC) since the first tour. Looking forward to the 2000 rerunion.

Comments: Wow!!!! Impressive. Wish I was computer literate. What a great looking site. I just love it. Are you living in the States? If so, it must be hard having your daughter in Wick. Nice looking and obviously brainy too. Obviously she is at least half Scottish. Ha Ha Ha. We left for the States in October '68, so we missed you completely. Hey, if you can make it to the reunion, the more the merrier. Jim Moore and I have to get on the phone this week as he has some plans that he wants to get implemented very soon. I think it will be a blast. I know some of the guys are worried that Thurso will have changed so much that they won't have fun. Had to remind them that they have changed also, but we had a great time when we were all together and that won't change with age, wrinkles or grey hair. We are all still young at heart. Thanks for taking the time to do this. I hope you have a good response. I'll have to keep checking. Cheerio for now. Maureen
