Walter V. Crouch 5 (Thomas Harris Crouch 4, John 3, Richard 2, Richard 1) born April 21, 1826, died May 18, 1902[13] with burial in the Lafayette Cemetery, New Orleans, LA. Married Annie E. Green. She was born July 26, 1845 and died April 6, 1874[2][11][13] He next married Mary R. Haughton on July 5, 1877 at Lafayette Presbyterian Or Fulton St. Church, New Orleans, LA. She was born September 19th, 1846; died July 22, 1899[13].

Major Walter V. Crouch, of the Louisiana brigade, army of Tennessee, was born at Richmond, Va. in 1826, and remained in his native state until 1847, when, after a few months stop at Montgomery, Ala., he made his home at New Orleans. In 1851-56 he held the office of assistant appraiser of the port. He entered the Confederate service in April , 1861, and soon afterward raised a company at New Orleans, which was mustered in as Company H. Thirteenth regiment Louisiana infantry. Refusing the captaincy in favor of Jown W. Ladouisse, he was elected first lieutenant at the organization. About three months later he was appointed regimental commissary, with the rank of captain. Just after the battle of Chickamauga, when Captain Crouch brought Gen. Daniel W. Adams from the field under the flag of truce after he was wounded, he was promoted to brigade commissary, with the rank of major, and he served in this capacity under General Gibson, until the surrender at Meridian, Miss., in May, 1865. He was wounded in the head at the battle of Shiloh, and was under fire at the battles of Perryville, in the Georgia campaign from Dalton to Atlanta and Jonesboro, at the Franklin and Nashville, and at Spanish Fort, and in his office was distinguished for the faithful and energetic performance of duty. After the war Major Crouch was for a number of years associated with Gen. J. B. Hood, first in the commision business and later in insurance, until 1876, when he was elected secretary and treasurer of the New Orleans and Carrollton railway company. [6]

Major Walter V. Crouch, was a close family friend of General J.B. Hood and was nearby when General Hood's wife died from complications due to Yellow Fever on Sunday, August 24, 1879. General Hood died from Yellow Fever on August 31, 1879.[10]

Walter V. Crouch, Secretary and Treasurer of the New Orleans and Carrollton Railroad Co., New Orleans, La., died May 16, 1902, at the age of seventy-six years. He was born in Richmond, Va. He started in business at the age of seventeen years, and was continuously engaged in active business, except for four years during the Civil War.

Mr. Crouch lived in New Orleans for fifty-four years, and for twenty-five years had been Secretary and Treasurer of the New Orleans and Carrolton Railroad Company. His attention to the affairs of the company was constant, and he saw many changes in the personnel of the officers during his many years of service.[5]

Children of Walter V. Crouch and Annie E. Green:

1. Bessie Temple Crouch, born circa 1868, died 12/15/1875 at age 7 years. [13]

2. Thomas Crouch 6 born circa 1872 [3]

Children of Samuel Rochester and Mary R. Haughton:

1.Emely H. Rochester  born 1866, died 1956 married William M. Hathorn who was born Aug. 3, 1872; died Feb. 22 1923.[2]  The 1880 Census lists Emely as a Crouch, but she was actually a step-daughter as her mother Mary R. Haughton had married a Samuel Rochester prior to her marriage to Walter V. Crouch. [3]  She's buried in the same above ground tomb as her step-father Walter V. Crouch.[2]

2. William Rochester  born circa 1869 [3]  The 1880 census list William Crouch, but William was step-son in lieu of a biological son as Mary R. Haughton was married to a Samuel Rochester prior to marrying Walter V. Crouch.  In the 1900 Census there's a William H. Rochester who married Evelyn M. Vreeland living in the Walter R. Vreeland home in which Mary Spotswood and Lucy Temple Crouch were living in during the 1910 Census.

Children of Walter V. Crouch and Mary R. Haughton:

3.Walter V. Crouch 6 born August 27, 1878 Orleans Parish, Louisiana [3][8]

4. Mary Spotswood Crouch 6 born May 2, 1880 Orleans Parish, Louisiana [3][8]; died September 25, 1961[13]. In 1910 census she's living in the Walter R. Vreeland household.  Married Frederick Hayne Vreeland on Nov. 21, 1910.  . 1930 Census has her as Vreeland.

5. Lucy Temple Crouch 6 born January 1882 in Orleans Parish, Louisiana [3]. In 1910 census she's living in the Walter R. Vreeland household.  Occupation Stenographer.

There is a George W. Crouch WWII Draft Registration Card born 20 Jan. 1882 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana; died April 2, 1952 age 69 years.[13] Was he a fraternal twin to Lucy T. Crouch who in the 1900 Census was still living with her father Walter V. Crouch?

There is a Warren Temple Crouch, born  circa 1884 who died 1887-11-14.  Was he a son of Walter V. Crouch Sr.[13] since Temple was Walter V. Crouch's mothers name?

Annie E. Green, wife of Walter V. Crouch born July 26, 1845; died April 6, 1874

John G. Crouch, born in Richmond, Va. Sept. 9, 1822; died August 19, 1853

John was in the 1850 Richmond City VA census so he moved to New Orleans shortly before his death.

Bessie Crouch, (our Precious Lamb) Born April 2, 1869; died Dec 15, 1875

Emily R. Hathorn 1866; died 1956

Lucy Crouch Holiday 1882; died 1964

Mary H. Crouch born Sept 19, 1846, died July 22, 1899

Birth Index for Orlean Parish [8] for the last two children lists here as Mary R. Haughton so the middle initial may be a transcription error.

Walter V. Crouch born April 21, 1822; died May 18, 1902

The transcribed burial vault record has John G. Crouch born in September 1822 and Walter V. Crouch born in April 1822. I suspect there is an error in transcribing or an error by the tombstone carver as they are brothers. The 1880 New Orleans, LA census has Walter's age as 54 and estimates based upon age that he was born in 1826. Citation [1] above mentions John G. Crouch as the 2nd son and Walter Crouch as the third son of a Mr. Crouch and Mary Brook Temple. There is enough age difference between John Crouch and his brother Bernard Crouch (both of whom are listed in the 1850 census below) for there to be another child. By the 1850 Richmond Census for Thomas Harris Crouch, Walter has moved out of the house which is validated by citation #6 below..

William M. Hathorn beloved husband of Emily H. Rochester born Aug 3, 1872; died Feb. 22, 1923.

Comparing the image of the 1900 census record to the 1910 transcribed census, the 1910 census has the middle initial for Lucy Crouch wrong. And while their father is now deceased, why are they living in the Vreeland household?
