A Weekend in the Loops of Western North Carolina

Southern Loops Tunnels II

Continuing to explore the tunnels on the Southern Loops, this page highlights Jarrett’s Tunnel and Andrews’ Geyser.

Just after the railroad crosses a fire road, it reaches Jarrett’s Tunnel.  This rather picturesque location seems to be a favorite among railfans.  The tunnel is seen here first from the east after a light overnight snow.

This view of the western portal of Jarrett’s Tunnel shows the interesting rock formation that the tunnel pierces.

I started hearing this train about 20 minutes earlier when it first neared Andrews’ Geyser.  Here it has finally cleared the switch on the west end of Coleman Siding.

And a few minutes later, the train emerges from the shadows of Jarrett’s Tunnel.

At Andrews’ Geyser, I was disappointed that I couldn’t get the higher elevation track in the picture, but I did get a decent shot of a train passing the Geyser.

And later, I noticed a few boxcars still in their Southern paint.

The seventh tunnel is Point Tunnel just before Old Fort.  I could not get close enough to get a good picture of it on this trip.

On the siding in Old Fort, I ran across this train waiting for clearance to head west late in the day; interesting because two of the three locomotives were CSX.
