A Weekend in the Loops of Western North Carolina

Clinchfield Loops Tunnels IV

This page highlights the final three tunnels on the former Clinchfileld Railroad.  In addition, there is one daylighted tunnel location and the 55th and southern most tunnel built on the Clinchfield located in Marion, NC.

Just beyond the southern portal of the 2nd Rocky Tunnel is the north end of Rocky siding.

The 3rd Rocky Tunnel was in this cut and was daylighted around 1977 to allow the Rocky Siding to be extended.  Here is the end of a northbound train waiting to meet…

this southbound train as the afternoon snow begins.

The 4th Rocky Tunnel sits in the middle of an interesting ess curve.

Honeycutt Tunnel is the last tunnel in the Clinchfield Loops.  Here the rock cut of the northern portal is barely visible at noon on this overcast day.

Nineteen railroad miles south is the northern portal of Marion Tunnel, the last of the Clinchfield’s original tunnels.
