130-134 Miles
We're nearly to Bree. Just ahead of us is the intersection of the Great East Road and the
Greenway. The Greenway used to be heavily travelled but now it is grown full of grass and that's how it got it's name. It runs from the south, past Bree, and then on north into the
eastern Downs. Still, this intersection of two important roads makes Bree a popular stop for travellers.
Bree itself is a collection of stone houses lying on the southwest side of Bree Hill. It is
circled on the open south and west sides by a deep dike topped by a high thick hedge.
We'll enter Bree here, on the western side, by walking across the causeway that crosses
the dike and through the gate built to protect the opening in the hedge. Since it's a fine, peaceful day, the west gate is standing open. On to Barliman Butterbur's Prancing Pony
Inn. Anyone thirsty for a pint ("It comes in pints?") of ale to celebrate reaching Bree?
