Middle Kingdom Scroll Texts

An assortment of scroll texts to be used for awards within the Middle Kingdom of the Society for Creative Anachronism.

All of the texts listed on this page conform to the guidelines set forth in the 3rd edition of the Middle Kingdom Scribal Handbook.   It is my goal to offer at least two versions of scroll text for each award, but this is a labor intensive project so please bear with me.  If you have a unique text that you would like to share and have added here feel free to email it to bess@denevell.com

Award of Arms, unknown device - from the 3rd edition Scribal Handbook pg. 27

     Proclaim throughout the realm that we <name of sovereign>, King <queen>of the Middle Kingdom, and <consort’s name> our Queen <king>, send greetings and commendations from our <location of event>.  Know that we, in recognition of the good works and deeds of <recipients name>, especially for <specific reason>, are minded to make unto him/her and Award of Arms.  We bestow upon him/her the right to bear Arms as duly registered within the society and all rights and responsibilities conveyed by elevation to this rank without let or hindrance from any person from this day onward.  Done by our hands this <day> of <month> Anno Societatis <year> from our <location of event>.

Royal Augmentation of Arms - from the 3rd edition Scribal Handbook pg. 27

Proclaim to all throughout the land that we <name of sovereign> King, <queen> by right of arms of the Middle Kingdom, and <name of consort>, our Queen <king>, have witnessed the service with which <name of recipient> hath exemplified the ideals which we strive to uphold, and therefore do we wish to acknowledge him/her in a fitting and seemly manner with some visible token of our esteem.  We are minded to give unto him/her a Royal Augmentation of Arms in recognition of his/her deeds.  It shall be a specific charge signifying our appreciation and commendation in accordance with both his/her wishes and the Rules of the College of the Arms of the Knowne World.  Done by our hands the <date> day of <month>, Anno Societatis <year>, in our <location of event>.

Kingdom Augmentation of Arms - from the 3rd edition Scribal Handbook pg. 27

** Because of the special nature of this award the office of the Dragon Herald prefers the scribe to obtain specific wording from their majesties at the time of the assignment **

Kingdom Augmentation of Arms wording used for Master Dafydd Blaidd (view scroll here)

Know all that we Valharic and Alys, King and Queen of the Middle Kingdom do hereby proclaim that Dafydd Blaidd hath rendered his heart and soul through his long and devoted service to Our realm.  He hath given of his time, his energies and portions of his personal life to provide all the citizens of the MidRealm with an electronic information site.  For his dedicated creation, maintenance, and provision of this site, the various lists and links, and the trials and tribulations associated with an endeavor of this magnitude, do we wish to acknowledge him with a visible token of our esteem and the appreciation of the entire Kingdom.  We therefore grant unto him a Kingdom Augmentation of Arms, giving him the right to bear argent a pale gules overall a dragon vert, into his arms in accordance with his wishes and the rules of the College of Arms.  Done this 26th day of May Anno Societatis XXXVII, while sitting on our thrones in our Shire of Mynnyd Seren.

Order of the Royal Vanguard - from the 3rd edition Scribal Handbook pg. 27

Let all persons within our Realm hear the proclamation that we <name of sovereign> King <queen> by right of arms of the Middle Kingdom, and <name of consort>, our Queen <king> set forth.  Know that in consideration of his/her outstanding services as Our Kings'/Queen's Champion we hereby make <name of recipient> a Companion of our Order of the Royal Vanguard.  We bestow upon him/her all rights and responsibilities associated with this Order and the right to bear the badge of the Order: Fieldless, a demi-dragon rampant argent.  Done by our hands this <date> day of <month>, Anno Societatis <year> in out <location of event>.

Proclaim throughout our Realm that we <name of sovereign>, King <queen> by right of arms of the Middle Kingdom, and <name of consort>, our Queen<king>, send heartfelt greetings.  Know that it is one of the pleasures of the crown to recognize individuals who exhibit great courtesy, grace, and honor to people of all ranks and who exemplify what it means to be the embodiment of The Dream.  Therefore, we are hereby minded to make unto <name of recipient> an Award of the Sapphire.  We bestow upon him/her all rights and responsibilities associated with The Sapphire and the right to bare the badge: Fieldless a step-cut gemstone azure.  Done by our hands this <date> day of <month>, A.S. <year>, in our <location of event>.

Unto all to whom these presents come know that we (name of Sovereign), King (Queen) by right of arms of the Middle Kingdom and (name of Consort), our Queen (King) send greetings. As we know at the treasure of a kingdom lies in
its future leaders, so do we know that such a person is before us in (name of recipient) and in recognition of his/her accomplishments in the martial arts (specific deed can be mentioned), it is fitting that we honor (name of recipient) by
naming him/her a Baton. As he/she has adorned to the Crown of the Middle Kingdom until now, so shall he/she continue

In all the armies in history there have been many warriors who have fought and led from within the ranks, rising to positions of great honor. A warrior has many virtues, such as skill at arms, leadership on the field, and teaching of the arts martial. Therefore, We, <<King>> and <<Queen>>, King and Queen of the MidRealm do herewith recognize <<Name>> as a Member of the Order of Red Company. He/She may style himself/herself a Serjeant of this noble order, and may bear its badge: Gules, two maces in saltire Argent, in canton upon his/her shield. To all and singular unto whom these presents shall come, know that We, <<King>> and <<Queen>>, King and Queen of the MidRealm, right mindful of his/her superior skill, leadership, and exemplary service to the Rapier Legions of Our kingdom, do herewith recognize <<Name>> as a Companion of Our Company of the Bronze Ring. Be it knowne unto all men by this present writings whearsoever it shall come to be read, heard or understanded and especially to all manner of officers under the dominion of our dread soveraigns, <name> and <name>, Monarchs of the Middle Kingdom, such as Barons, Seneschales, Knights Marshall and to their deputies, certifying to them by this letter that it pleaseth our said soveraigns, with their most honorable counsel to admit < name of recipient > as a Warder of the Bronze Ring.  Know that he has proven right worthy in honor and service, of sufisiant cunning and skill in the exercise of civil combat and hath shown as much in tryal by arms with our Rapier Legions.  Above all, know that we find him an honorable gentle to whom we entrust the nurture and gentle care of the Noble Art of Defence in these our Middle Kingdom, trusting him to offer goodly instruction to all who seek it, counsel in good season and that he shall forthrightly take action to defend the honor of this kingdom, by whosoever it be challenged. Company of the White Lance - from former signet website

Both in times of war and times of peace the undaunted Equestrian honed their battle skills in tournaments to prepare rider and steed for the defenses of Our glorious kingdom. An equestrian has many virtues such as skill in riding, mounted precision at arms, and teaching of the arts equestrian; True leadership is displayed when all culminate in a symbiosis of horse and rider, to carry them to victory. Therefore, We, <<King>> and <<Queen>>, King and Queen of the MidRealm do herewith recognize <<Name>> as a Companion of Our Company of the White Lance. In all the armies in history there have been archers who have shot and taught from within the ranks, rising to positions of great honour. An archer has many virtues, such as skill with the bow, leadership on the line, and teaching of the arts and sciences of archery.
