League History

The league began in the fall of 1997, with the Helmanators and Big Cats as the founding members, playing each other every week. The Helmanators, lulled the Big Cats to sleep that year and was the first champion. It was from this point on that the Helmanators were known as “evil” and the rivalry between the Cats and Nators was born. In 1998, new interest became apparent and as two new teams joined, the Neddy Eddies and the Wx Nils. The Helmanators defended their championship, defeating the Neddy Eddies. Further Interest was found in 1999. The Neddy Eddys, devastated by their lost decided to sit out and disbanded. Two new teams joined however, those being the Death Knights and the Flying Tigers. In their inaugural season, the Tigers defeated the Big Cats. The league looks ahead to the 2000 season with great expectations, installing true weekly head to head competition and planning three additional expansion teams.

The 2000 Season ended with a BANG! The Bang of the Helmanators, who were thought to be dead and barely slipped into the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs they Shocked the heavily favored Weather Nils with a Surprise last minute QB move that won them the game. They then won the SuperBowl by upsetting the Walking Wounded with a comeback victory due to M. Faulks’ 4 TD performance on Monday night.

The 2001 was quite a memorable one, as the Nasty Norsemen left the league, and was replaced by a young upstart, the Omnipotent Force. A live on-line draft was completed, and The Llamas with the Number 1 pick, selected Marshall Faulk. Big Surprise. As the season chugged along the Flying Tigers became the clear class of the league due to a strong running game and the super play of Oakland’s Rich Gannon.  The rest of the league lingered together as parity played a dominate role. The trade of the year cane between the Nights and the Nils, as the Nils received Terrell Owens in exchange for Randy Moss. This trade strengthened the Nils and troubled the Nights as Moss Struggled through much of the year.  Later in the season the Force separated themselves from the pack, challenging the Tigers, and, Rich Gannon and the Tigers began to struggle. Meanwhile, once bitter rivals, the Cats and Helmanators forged an alliance as they tumbled hopelessly out of the playoff race. The Cats, giving up all hope for the season, even cut star players in an effort to get the 1st pick next season and thwart the ever strengthening Force.  Alas, the league did not stand for these insane tactics and demanded a fix. The players were placed back on the Cats.

The Rookie Force then dominated the playoffs, smashing the Nils in the semi finals and the Tigers in the Championship game.

The League's sixth season began with the departure of the Death Knights and the addition of a new Team, Obscene.  The Cats used their controversial first pick to take the valuable  Marshall Faulk and the Nators followed suit picking Kurt Warner. Then the Rams sucked and Faulk and Warner were busts! Meanwhile the Alpaca, (formally the llama) quietly pick a team of solid backs like Tomlinson and Rickey Williams. The big surprise was the lack of any Tiger-Nil trade involving NFL MVP Rich Gannon. Usually that is an annual event!  The new team, Obscene, was much quieter and less troublemaking than expected. The league continues to have great parity as none of the same teams have been in the Championship game over the past three seasons. The Alpaca, through their solid draft in running backs and ability to stay healthy, smashed the Nils in both teams first championship appearance.

First off for 2003, the administrative changes: The Alpaca became the Spitting Seahorse, The Impotent Force became the Bozos and the Pasty Express became the Dam Failures. Name changes seem to be helpful as 2 of the 3 teams that changed their name eventually played in the Championship game.  The Big rule change in the offseason, 1 point per reception played a big role in how the draft was conducted. The Cats thought WR's were at a premium and grabbed a few. The Nators never showed for the draft and his team showed it. The season went on with the Dam Failures demonstrating weekly that they were a powerful force with Priest Holmes at RB. The Failures scored over 130 points in week one, setting the league record. The Bozos trailed the Failures for much of the season. The biggest and only trade of the season occurred between the Cats and Bozos, the Cats sending a then OK Drew Bledsoe to the Bozos for a then injured E. James. James healed and returned to all pro from, while Bledsoe sputtered, and was eventually cut by the Bozos. Although there were no objections at the time of the trade, however there were plenty of complaints when James was back to form.  This stacked the Cats team with Indy and Rams stars for a run at the playoffs, as they they reeled off wins, including two against the dreaded Nators, including a Manning-Harrison 40+ Comeback in the last few minutes of MNF, as they came back against Tampa. The Nators were speechless and never the same team again. The Failures continued to dominate teams, setting the league record for points in a game at 155.92. The Failures, Bozos, Nils and Cats charged into the playoffs with the Cats and Failures the Heavy favorites with their powerful line-ups. The Cats and Failures played each other in the first round of the playoffs and provided the highest scoring and most dramatic game in league history. The Failures pulled ahead of the Cats 133.20-131.34 on a late sack by the recently picked up Carolina Defense. The Cats were devastated. Meanwhile the Bozos quietly smashed the Nils (Seems like a pattern here...Nils getting smashed in the playoffs) to advance to the Championship Game. The Bozos then came through in the clutch, as the Failures KC players faltered. Led by a strong New England defense and a great performance by L. Tomlinson, The Bozos took their second championship in their three years of existence in the league.

The 2004 Story...First the name changes, The Spitting Seahorse became Brothers in Arms,
The Dam Failures became Harvey Ballbangers,  Obscene became the Maineville Maulers, and the Helmanators switched names to his other alias, Snake Bite.

The key note this year is that everyone always says it is better to participate in the live draft than let the computer pick for you. Well, The Flying Tigers missed the live draft and we all felt pretty good about that and figured he was done! Unfortunately for us, the computer that picked for him had some insight into the Famous Tiger "Bible" and selected a QB, P.Manning in the first round. The Tigers now became known as the TigerMannings.

On the whole, the season was dominated by the Nils, Flying Tigers and Bozo's. the Maulers had a strong start but faded late. The Cats had their worst start ever, 0-5,  but finished a strong 7-2 for a .500 season at 7-7. Only a close game by the evil snakebite team edged out
the Cats in week 13 ended the Cats playoff hopes.

A new record was almost set for points scored in a game, as the Tigers scored 154.41 points in one week against Brother in Arms. The Tigers won by over 98 points. He was led by P. Manning in his 49 TD season with 40 points that week.  The Tigers did lose a big game to the snakes though, who mounted a 70+ point comeback on Monday night. Going into a monday night game, the Snakes were down by about 67 points and then three players, T. Owens, J. Whitten and the Philly Defense combined for 75.06 points capping the greatest comeback known in the WFL. This came full circle for the Snakes how succumbed to a big comeback loss to the Cats in the previous year.

The commish was quite pleased that the Bozos were crushed in the championship game, preventing him from winning his 3rd (in 4 years) title. The Flying Tigers, behind the arm of P. Manning cruised to their 2nd Championship.

Oh, and bye the way, as usual the Nils made the playoffs, and got crushed in the first round.

Now, 2005...

First the admin changes ...Spitting Seahorse became the Hair of the dog. Harvey Ballbangers became Beer Essentials The Bozo's left the league and we were joined by a new
team, Iron Mountain.

The Number one pick was Tomlinson, taken by Hair of the Dog. The night before the season the Cats made a bold prediction that The Cats would win the league this year. The Nils (once again) The season was quite a competitive one by 6 teams,  Hair of the Dog...Weather Nils, Flying Tigers...Beer Essentails...Big Cats and Helmanators. The Helmanators rose to the top of the league though by late season, and was the first to clinch a playoff birth. The flying
Tigers were the first to fade from this group. The strong Nils team and Hair team clinched playoff berths by the 13 week. The Cats were ready to clinch the 4th spot but a tough Beer team got a 52 point defensive performance from Seattle against Philadelphia on a Monday night to avoid elimination. It may have been the highest defensive effort ever.

The cats then made the playoffs in the following week, beating a tough Hair team. The cats were down by about 15 points during their 1st round playoff game with the Nators going into Monday night. The Cats only had one player left, their Tight end, Todd Heap. Heap had the best game of his career, scoring 2 TD's and 10 Catches, putting the Cats over the top
in dramatic fashion. The advanced to their first championship game in over 5 years, beating their rival, the dreaded nators. This defeat of the nators eclipsed their previous great moment in history when they defeated the Nators on a Monday night fueled by a furious Manning to Harrison rally vs Tampa Bay.

Oh, BTW, the Nils got SMashed in the first round of the playoffs.

The underdog cats then had the greatest moment in team history beating the favored  Hair team with the unlikely combo of Brandon Stokley and T.J. Housmanzadah as starting WR's...Clinton Portis and Shawn Alexander provided much of the scoring at RB though.

In 2006, we expanded to 10 teams, and once again the Nils lost in playoffs.  The rookie Sharks won the title and if a force to be reckoned with! Visit the season history page at: http://archive.fantasysports.yahoo.com/nfl/2006/33382

2007 awaits, with a bet for plenty of debate, squabbles and fun. Game on.
