Anyone that didn’t make it out to Shirley Freeman’s home for the August get together missed a great evening. Good food, great company, and a lot of conversation. Don’t forget the Covered Bridge festival October 10-21st. Shirley Freeman tells us that most of the Arts and Crafts are in the Bridgeton area.

There have been some questions about when dues are due. The Watercolor Society year runs January 1 thru December 31 therefore, anyone paying dues anytime during the year, is paying dues for that calendar year. Dues for 2008 are due in January. You must have your dues paid to participate in the Members Only Show this fall.

Hope that all of these ideas and opportunities have made you all want to get out your art supplies and do something. This is your club, but we can only be visible in the community by your participation. Hope to see you all at the September meeting. Remember to mark the 3rd Tuesday of the month for WVWS.

Please mark your calendars for our shows in 2008. The Juried Show will be May 9, 2008 – June 14, 2008 and the Member’s Only Show will be next August 1, 2008 thru September 6, 2008.

Watercolour Plein Air Painting Checklist:
* Watercolor paintbox or selection of tubes
* Pencil & eraser
* Brushes
* Watercolour paper/block/canvas
* painting panels
* Medium/Bottle of water
* Clips or pegs for keeping paper in place

Plein Air

The term "en plein air" is a French phrase and means "in the open air" so watercolor painting en plein air is painting out doors. Now painting outdoors gives you a feeling of being one with nature and just gives you the perfect constantly changing light. These are the ideal criteria to make your perfect watercolor painting of a landscape or outdoor still life.

One of the biggest things that makes your painting a success is the way you translate your observation to the paper. And the observation is something that is influenced by several conditions. Your observation depends a lot on how the atmosphere is on that particular time of the day. What I mean is what is dust, pollution, water vapor doing to your observation. This is very important to the end result. But this is also the extreme joy of plein air painting.
Tips:
• A largish zippered pencil box or toiletry bag is ideal for putting your brushes etc. in.
• Retractable brushes take up minimal space.
• One of those blocks of watercolour paper where the paper is 'stuck down' is ideal because you don't need to stretch it, but you will need something sharp to separate off a sheet once you're done.
• Consider buying a watercolour field set – a small box of paints complete with retractable brush; some even have waterbottles.

* Paper towel or cloth
* Cup for washing brushes
* Chair, Easel
* Bug repellant, sun block
* Bweater, jacket, hand warmers
* Trash bag
* Lunch, drink
