Richard D. Hess is a watercolorist. Born in Eastern Pennsylvania, he moved to Indiana as a child and graduated, in liberal arts, from Butler University. During more than thirty years in marketing management with a major consumer products company, he traveled extensively in Europe, Latin America and the Orient and even lived for a time in Germany. Throughout these experiences his interest in drawing and painting remained high.

After many years in Brown County, Dick now resides in Lafayette. He is a past president of Indiana Heritage Arts and a signature member of the Watercolor Society of Indiana. Other affiliations include membership in Hoosier Salon, Indiana Artists Club and the Wabash Valley Watercolor Society. His work is regularly displayed at the Brown County Art Gallery, has been jury selected for numerous exhibits and hangs in private collections in several US states and Europe.
His representational style reflects a depth of interest in the historic and the nostalgic. He uses realism to capture the mood and record the beauty and dignity of places and things which may be passing, with time, from our view.
