So now you have a web space. You made a web page. But how do you get your page on your web site? This procedure is called FTP. And you can use it for a lot more than web page publishing. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. You use this protocol to transfer any files from your desktop to a server and vice versa. The best way to do this is by getting a software program for this
purpose. You can buy FTP-programs or download
one from the Internet. The following site has more than 25 free ftp programs.
http://download.cnet.com/windows/ftp-software/?tag=mncol%3Bsort&rpp=10&sort=downloadCount+asc In these software programs you will see two file windows. One shows all the files on your computer, the other window shows all the files on your website. Most of them allow you to drag and drop files from your computer to the website. This is called "Upload". ATTENTION: Not all the files on your server are visible on the internet! There is most likely a directory called WWW or HTML or INTERNET or PUBLIC etc. All the files in this directory are visible on your website. The one that is called "index.htm" is your home page. (Some servers use "default.htm" or "welcome.htm".) The address is http://www.webspaceprovider.com/~accountname. To access any other files in your Internet directory, you have to type in the address of the file. http://www.webspaceprovider.com/~accountname/filename.htm. Because this is getting confusing, the chance for typing errors increases, and the Internet is sensitive for Uppercase and Lowercase letters, it is smarter to provide the links for all your other pages on your home page. If your file is uploaded successfully, you can access it from the Internet. If it does not include graphics, but only square boxes, you have not uploaded your files that contain the graphics yet. (Or they are not in the right directory.)
