Goal: To produce a
trumpet that was capable of being played through one of two bells, one
muted the other not muted.
Requrements; base horn, second bell and valve from another horn as well
as assorted additional bracing, etc.
Before
Above and below; what I started with. A Holton Collegiate trumpet
that needed work. These pictures make it look better than it really did.
You can't see it but the leadpipe was bend downward. It also
needed
refinishing and some dent work..
After
Ok. Here's the "after" pictures. The bell on the left is the original
Collegiate. The one on the right is from a private label "Temple"
trumpet. "Temple" is the name
of a music store on the east cost many years ago. Someone made horns
for them and put their name on them.
Why does this remind me of the "Illudium PU-36 Explosive Space
Modulator"? I like that look
though! You can see the fourth valve from
the "Temple" trumpet.
View from the right. Added bracing for the lead pipe. I'm thinking of
modifying that though.
A good shot of the bells and bell tapers. You can see the bell braces
back there. It's solid...yet doesn't interfere with intonation.
Another view of the bell braces.
Closeup of right side.
That ring you see there is intended for the left middle finger. the
pinky finger goes below the fourth piston and the next finger goes just
below the bell, over the valve.
Thus, you have a solid grip. This horn is a bit bell heavy...not overly
so but you notice it.
Next, we had to plug the extra valve port so an old valve button was
soldered in place!
Decided to add a bit of reinforcement for the leadpipe. That is the
section of tubing that it circled in black.
