Restoring the Mt Broderick

The Mt Broderick was built in 1928 as a 10 section, buffet, solarium lounge car by the Pullman Company. It was purchased by Kentucky Railway Museum from the Pullman Company in 1958. It was used in many Kentucky Railway Museum mainline excursions and is now in the shop undergoing extensive repairs and restoration.
The car was originally equipped with ice air-conditioning but was reshopped in 1932-1933 and outfitted with 32v electro-mechanical air-conditioning. The desk area was removed and a small galley installed. The interior windows have mahogany frames but the outside windows were replaced with sheet metal frames which were not adequately secured to the car body. These frames were later replaced by frames of less quality with the result being extensive water damage (pitting, rust, erosion) to the interior walls. The lower 4 inches of each sill kingpin has been replaced and custom built exterior windows are now being installed.
The exterior of the car has been sanded, primed, and painted, using the colour original scheme of black roof over green body. Contributions to this project may be made with our online secure donation form.
