Model Trains

Not only does Kentucky Railway Museum operate seventeen (17) miles of mainline track but it also hosts an extensive collection of model trains and model layouts. Kentucky Railway Museum, in conjunction with Family Modular Lines, operates a large model train exhibit building. The building includes static exhibits and operating layouts in a variety of gauges and time periods. The building contains over three thousand (3,000) square feet of space devoted to the model train enthusiast. The primary layout is an HO gauge modular system 56' long and 12' wide in an "L" shaped configuration. A German HO layout (Mėklin) includes a complete carnival scene. A 3 track Lionel layout depicts the Nelson and LaRue county areas traversed by the Kentucky Railway Museum mainline. Also represented in working layouts are "N" gauge and early "HO" gauge. A Prewar and Tinplate layout is under construction, as are American Flyer and S gauge and HO trolley layouts. Buddy-L, Ives, Marx, Gilbert, and hand-built models by John Barret Hundley, Jr. and other craftspersons are on exhibit throughout the building. The layouts and exhibits are maintained, built, expanded, and operated by members of the Family Modular Lines. Additional support comes through donations made by model train manufacturers, resellers, other interested persons, and Museum admissions and donations.
