Nintendo's Game Watches Line
Donkey Kong
Now I bet you are thinking that this is just another one of those Donkey Kong
ports of the arcade, but it is not. Oddly enough when Nintendo desired to
fire out a new game watch game they decided to port over a likeness of the
"Big City" level from the Super Gameboy Sequel that came out also in
1994 when this watch did. The game seems pretty fun with enough options to
keep the player busy for awhile.
Starfox
Starfox, which was the later of their game watch games released in the 1990's
is based off primarily the "Corneria" opening stage of the SuperNES
game of which is it based off of. This game is a quite good port considering
the limitations of the watch, and it came with an added bonus. This watch
came with an headphone jack which you can barely see on the top left part of
the watch face. By jacking this in you would be able to hear a lot better
audio with greater volume than without.
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. for the game watch series was another of the games that came
out in the original line of Game Watches with the likes of Legend of Zelda and
Super Mario Bros. 3 which are both shown below. This game tries to capture
the feel of the original Super Mario Bros and I feel it did a decent job of
that. You got the move around on various platforms, travel in warp pipes,
knock off familiar bad guys from the game, and take out King Koopa. The game
is a fair representation and even includes the nice little touches like the
entering of the castle as the end of the levels.
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario Bros. 3 for the game watch series was a title that came out right
along side of the Legend of Zelda watch shown below. The game features some
of the areas of the NES game, many of the characters too. In this game just
like the NES version you need to knock off the Koopa kids and eventually King
Koopa as well. Each has stolen a wand that has changed the rulers of the
various worlds into animals and you must get the wand back2 so they can return
to their normal form. This game like Zelda is quite an adventure for a little
wristwatch game.
Super Mario World
Super Mario World for the game watch game series was a big thing when it came
out as it arrived at the time the SuperNES was launched with that as its pack
in game. The game is a pretty good rendition of the SuperNES original after
all considering it is an LCD game. Nintendo took great care with this release
as they included it in a nice box and included the earphones which this game
could use in the jack on the top left part of the watch face. Just like
Starfox which came later it has superior LCD visuals and greater audio,
especially when using the earphones.
Tetris
My all time favorite puzzle game in existance, and as a matter of fact the
overall most favorite and popular puzzle video game in existance as well. The
game is Tetris and if you don't know it then you must have been living on Mars
or something (so fix that stuff NASA crashed there for us ok?) Anyways, the
game is at first deceptively easy. The concept is to manipulate seven puzzle
pieces made out of four blocks so that when they drop they form a complete
line and clear out. As you advance every 10 lines the speed picks up and so
on until you can't stand the drop rate and the pieces hit the top so you lose.
Easy to play, not as easy to master, impossible to finish. This perfect
little puzzler that started on GB for Nintendo which made it an instant seller
was miniturized that same year and shoved on a watch. The game plays the same
and the little Game-A jingle plays as well. If you can find it, have fun with
it as I have not seen many of these around unlike the others from 1989.
The Legend of Zelda
My personal favorite among the game watches as I used to own one of these a
long time ago, sadly one of the buttons(right) fell out and made it useless.
In this game as with any Zelda title the idea is that Link needs to collect
the pieces of the triforce in order to defeat Gannon and save Princess Zelda.
In this game you navigate multiple dungeons taking out well known enemies from
the original NES game such as Keese, Zol, and bosses like the dreaded Gleeok.
Some of the better known weapons from the NES game have been included such as
the boomerang, bombs, arrows, and more which makes this an overall very
enjoyable game for any fan of Zelda and expecially the original NES game.
