Wind Generators

High efficiency home-based wind generators are already on the market.  Industry revenue quadrupled between 2000 and 2006, with an extrapolated growth curve of 20% per year.  About 45MW installed domestically.

Large-scale utility generators account for 74,000MW worldwide (about 1% of global energy consumption).

US Department of Energy has a goal of obtaining 6% of electricity nationwide from wind power by 2020. (American Wind Energy Association)

Micro Energy

Solar Power (Photovoltaics)

Photovoltaics are useful for localized power generation with capital costs of about $4.00/watt (2005 prices).

Industry grown was annualized 60% between 2000 and 2004, with more recent years hampered by shortages of refined silicon.

There are approximately 2,000MW of photovoltaics in service.

Micro Combined Heat and Power (MCHP)

Micro-CHPs replace the household furnace and hot water heater.  When generating heat, the unit also generates electricity, maximizing the fuel’s energy content (usually natural gas).  Most household MCHPs produce about 1kWh electricity while producing 10,000 BTUs for heating.

Micro-CHPs are being used in Japan (50,000 households with Matsushita and Honda units) and in UK (Whisper-Tech).  Climate Energy LLC in the United States is introducing a Honda-based product domestically.
