Verona's Luther Risner, helped Big Bone Lick
State Park grow

Luther Risner, of Verona, a former park manager who took Big
Bone Lick State Par k from a picnic area to what it is today,
died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was 91.

Mr. Risner had retired as an expediter from Avco Financial
Services and was farming when he was asked to be a manager
for the park. When he started working there, there were just a
few picnic tables, said his daughter, Lucille Maddox of
Verona.

But her father took charge and was responsible for
construction of the new office building, a swimming pool and
campground. He also helped gain funding to buy
surrounding acreage to expand the park.

''He didn't mind going to Frankfort and saying 'I need such
and such,' '' Ms. Maddox sa id.

Mr. Risner had several careers before the state park. A native
of Morgan County, Mr. Risner later moved to Perry County
where he taught school in a one-room school house. It was
there that he owned and operated the Risner and Dunn
General Store with his wife, Cassie Dunn Risner, who
preceded him in death.

Mr. Risner was also a Kentucky State Police officer in Hazard
before moving to Boone County to farm.

Mr. Risner was well-known in the farming community. People
would often stop by to sit and and drink the cider he made
from apples he grew on his farm. Mr. Risner was a member of
New Bethel Baptist Church and liked to sing in the church
choir, his daughter said. He was a deacon emeritus at the
church.

Other survivors include a son, J. D. Risner of Verona;
daughter, Edna Mae ''Tag'' Pearson of Hamilton, Ohio; sisters,
Virginia Vest and Mattie Arnett, both of Verona; four
grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two
great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hamilton-Stanley
Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at
the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery,
Verona. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Disease
Association, 644 Linn St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45203.
