As you come out from the Main Gate, you can see several of the major buildings of the Temple complex. To your left is the Oracle, housing the Temple's interactive divinatory oracle. Just beyond this, it the sculpture garden, featuring statues of famous personages related to the Hecatean Tradition and Greek Mythology.
To the front, is the Temple of Hecate, and the sculpture of Hecate-Trevia. To the right, and out of view is the Temple Library.
This acropolis (or 'high city') was modeled in part after the famous Parthenon of Athens, and other sacred temple sites. You will note that the Temple and the Oracle sit higher than the main plaza itself, with the Temple being the highest building. This was done for the same reason that the ancients did this: to delineate these particular buildings as locations of greater spiritual importance than the other structures around them, and in ascending order.
Throughout the grounds are cypress trees. These were placed not only for their decorative effect, but also for their symbolism. Traditionally associated with graveyards and the Underworld, they are, like the willow and the yew, a symbol of the Goddess.
Visitors to the earlier Temple of Hecate online will note immediately the extensive use of color throughout the new site. This was done to make the Temple more in keeping with actual sacred architecture, which despite 19th century misconceptions, was actually very brightly colored. The same holds true with the various pediments and statues in the garden that have also been painted realistically in keeping with ancient decorative practices.
