Simply A Christian

Today, everyone wants to simplify—our homes, our routines, our lifestyle… everything.  By simplifying, we are told we can have more meaningful relationships, more family time, and (my favorite), less stress.  The key is to focus on what is truly important and necessary.

Is there anything simple about looking for God in today’s religious environment?  There is certainly nothing simple about what man has done to the Lord’s church.  There are approximately 38,000 “Christian” denominations (divisions)—each with its own creed, earthly headquarters, and plan on how to have a relationship with God.

Historically, some of these groups have actually gone to war against one another; while on the other hand today most want to say that their differences in teachings are not really that important (“Doctrine doesn’t matter what you believe as long as we follow Jesus”).  One group has a pope, another “living apostles;” some have “lay leaders” while others have conventions to determine how they approach doctrine.   Some groups say the Holy Spirit leads them today, while others claim new revelation has stopped.  What is a searcher to do?  Where are they to turn to find that one thing that seems so elusive today—truth?

There is a really simple answer to those looking for simple Christianity—let’s just look at the Bible.  “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth” (John
17:17)

It really simplifies things a lot when we approach things from that
viewpoint.  Here are some very simple things to consider…

What does the Bible say about….

God               Jesus Christ           The Future of Man          Salvation

People who simply followed the teachings of God in the Bible were called Christians—not a denominational name plus “Christian” to designate what type of Christian they were. There were only Christians—plain and simple.

Their belief system was summed up by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:4-6, “There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”

They listened to his admonitions in 1 Timothy 4:16, “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.” While we hear today that “teaching” (or doctrine) isn’t important, they understood that it was.
