Notes about Mary Elizabeth Brown
From an article that was printed in The Anderson News January 24, 1980, written by Louis and April Rooks-DeLuca...

"In 1881 James W. Hill married Mary Elizabeth Brown. Mary had been raised in Lawrenceburg and in the big fire of 1874 when she was 10, her brother, Dan, saw the cupola above the courthouse in flames and he took a bucket of water up to put out the fire. James and Mary rented the Dave Young farm on Benson Road, and in about 1893 they bought land from Frank Dillon along the railroad near Avenstoke, and moved into the log house. Dillon had built the house out of poplar and he also used oxen to work his farm. Later in 1913, James and Mary built a new home up on the road out of boards sawn from the old poplar logs.

By then James and Mary had 9 boys and 2 girls and James told his older sons to make sure all the nails were pulled out of the logs. Then Ed Scrogham agreed to saw them into planks but with a special fee for every tooth any nails broke on his saw. From that day on he was amazed to recall that he did not hit a single nail."
