Clear Creek

July 27, 2006

We did an observation of plants and animals.  It was raining, and we heard thunder; so we didn't spend too much time investigating.  We found:

Sycamore trees

American Elm trees

Earwig

Female (cerci not hooked)

Water Quality Tests

We did a total type bacteria test to measure for the total number of bacteria present as well as a coliscan bacteria test to measure the amount of fecal bacteria (namely E. Coli) present.  Our results were:

Person

Number of E. coli Total Bacteria Number
S. 81 too many to count
A. 37 too many to count
N. 87 too many to count
Sp. 48 too many to count
J. 78 too many to count

It is important to note that these water quality tests were done during an extended rain storm.  In Richmond, unfortunately, there are combined sewer overflows which allow untreated sewage to be pumped into local waterways when the flow of raw sewage and rain water increase beyond the capacity of the local water treatment plant.  This makes the presence of E. coli very high and the chance of disease from ingesting this water also high.
