Brandon's Bits

Greetings fellow Rotarians!

Dave's Bits coming soon!

With humility, Dave Brandon

News on the Newsletter

The editor is working on getting photos into the email that you receive so that you do not need to click through to this website! But that will have to wait for June as the Rotary newsletter staff has been A) overwhelmed with other projects B) lazy enough to want to sleep 6 hours a night C) puzzled about technology D) all of the above (answer: D). Thanks to Jason at Tom Brinkoetter's Homesite web design business for helping with getting the pieces to make this work!

Are you a good photographer?

Your editor is making a plea to a clubmember who has 2 qualifications: good attendance* and passable photography skills? What do I mean by "passable"? Doesn't shake the camera and can see if he or she did! Unfortunately the editor is bad about both of these items owing to poor vision and motor skills... as evidenced by some of the photos herein.

If you would like to "click" the button approximately twice per month, you can be our "ESP", Esteemed Staff Photographer! The editor will take over when it comes to converting the digital pictures to the correct web format so you needn't puzzle about that part. Thanks for considering this dynamic position. It's mainly 3 scenarios:

  1. Teacher of the month
  2. Scholar/athletes of the month
  3. Any other newsworthy speakers or happenings re Rotary (at club or out and about)

Most exciting of all: you will be issued the club's digital camera! The final requirement will be that you will need to write down names of whoever you have photographed (not the teacher or students since I get those names from Martin & Tony). Email: bill@game.fan.org

*When you are not here, the editor will pinch-hit with his own digital camera.

    Library Books & Penny Fund

April's speakers honorarium, library books, went to Mt Zion intermediate school. May's school is Muffley Grade School. April''s penny fund of $217.72 went to Northeast Community Fund. Be generous for May, pennies go to Good Samaritan Inn.

What is 4444 Rotary? (Part 3)

Four 4's above stand for the four core lists of beliefs of Rotary. The Four-Way Test & Four Avenues of Service was featured in previous months. Here's part 3 in our series of 4 lists...

    Object of Rotary

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

Rotary Family Day at the Ball Park

JULY 16, 2006 GAME DAY TIME: 1:00 P.M. ST. LOUIS CARDINALS VERSUS THE LOS ANGELES DODGERS AT NEW BUSCH STADIUM

Since all of the Cubs games are not on the group sales listing, we had to choose a different game for our annual outing.  It is absolutely going to be an outstanding baseball outing.  The Dodgers are always a world premiere team to watch.   The game is an afternoon game with the day also being “cap” day at the ballpark.  The first 25,000 fans receive a ST. LOUIS baseball cap.

We will have a pre-game ceremony on the field.  Make sure you are in your seats for the opening ceremonies.  They will feature Rotary up on the big display boards in the stadium.  We have a total of 1500 tickets to sell.  Again we will receive a matching amount of money from Cardinal Care for our on-going literacy projects.  A sur-charge has been added to the ticket cost for the Cardinal Care match, therefore the price on the ticket will not match the cost of the gameday ticket –same as in the past two years.

Rotary Clubs remember you can sell tickets to all the Cardinals fans within your communities… several ways to do that… advertise the activity someway in your local media… all tickets must be sold.  There is no return of any tickets in group sales in the new ball park.  The stadium is sold out for the entire season, therefore this is one way you can see the exciting National League division winner (2005); the World Series Cardinals in (2004) and the new ball park.

$20 per ticket. Mail with payment by May 19, 2006 TO:  ROD BUFFINGTON, 2001 BARBERRY DRIVE, SPFLD, IL 62704 E-MAIL: quiltonerod@insightbb.com

    What ever happened to Polio?

Our rarving editor was roving around Washington DC's Smithsonian American History Museum and stumbled into this great exhibit partially underwritten by Rotary. As new members may not know, that Rotary played a key role in helping to vanquish Polio as a dread disease. The exhibit was quite large and had interactive parts so kids could become aware of something that may have no knowledge of. And it also told of the growing danger of clueless parents who choose to not allow their children to be immunized and thus expose them to much greater risk than the miniscule risks of innoculations.

    Project Playground at Scovill Park

Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday that they built a wonderful playground at Scovill but it's been almost 20 years and it's going to need some fix-up. Volunteers may be needed--stay tuned.

    Teacher of the month

Martin Getty presented the Teacher of the Month award to Alice Boliek of the Decatur Area Technical Academy. Her current assignment is Culinary Arts/FACSRO Instructor with 17 years experience.

Alice has developed a systematic approach to providing formal learning (textbooks, discussion, etc.) and hands-on activities that students understand, enjoy and can learn from. Her high energy and positive outlook towards her job is contagious. Mrs. Boliek has developed and maintained a worthwhile relationship with the local industry that has assisted her in providing up-to-date information and practices for her students.

The commitment and professionalism Alice exhibits is evident among her students and colleagues. Her student have proven that they can compete for jobs in their area and even specialize in certain aspects. An organized and well-managed classroom environment provides for productive and meaningful opportunities for students. The classroom/lab atmosphere is relaxed, but serious, where students feel comfortable interacting with Mrs. Boliek and other students in an organized and appropriate fashion.

    Outstanding Scholar Athletes

In April, the Decatur Athletic Council, Ameren IP, and the Rotary Club honored two outstanding Scholar Athletes from Eisenhower High School. Tony Wilkins presented the awards to:

Molly Fryman, daughter of Mike & Diane Fryman of Decatur, is a senior with a grade point average of 4.95. She's play for 4 years in the soccer program, lettering 2 of those years. Quote from her coach: "If you want someone who will demonstrate teamwork, character, hard work and academic excellence, she's the one." - Alan Rider. Her future plans include attending Ohio State majoring in Political Science.

Brandon Jelks is a senior with GPA of 4.1. He's a 4 year letter-winner in Football, 4 year letter-winner in Track, 2 year Basketball player and the Big 10 Reigning High Jump Champion. Quote from: "You could not have selected a better young man in terms of hard work and diligence." - Coach Collingwood. He's been accepted at Eastern Illinois University where he will participate in track and work on decathlon.

    Congratulations to both!
