Derby Town Divas
Our History
The Derby Town Divas began in April 2002. After reading a newspaper article about the Red Hats, four friends got together and decided to form a Red Hat chapter of our own. Rita Belcher, Gail Decker, Vicki Hainline and Pam Myers were the founding members. We had a couple of dis-organization meetings and in June 2002, we became an official, registered chapter of the Red Hat Society. We chose the name "Derby Town Divas" to reflect our city - Louisville, KY - and our attitude. By the time we had our first purple outing, we had been joined by Bettie Lewis. A month later Janet Staashelm became a Diva and this group of six became the core of our chapter. (From left to right in the picture - Rita, Pam, Bettie, Gail and Jan. Vicki was missing that night.)
After our first misadventure at Bahama Breeze (we waited three hours for tables), we went to Max & Erma's the following month. Since that time, we've eaten out at several restaurants - both local and out of town. Three of us went to Branson, MO last summer and joined 300 other Red Hatters for a fun-filled weekend. . We've been to the Comedy Club and saw Heywood Banks (what a hoot!!) and to Derby Dinner Playhouse. We went to see the Christmas lights at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, TN and we gathered pumpkins at Hubers Orchard in Indiana.
There's no doubt, we attract attention wherever we go. Since those first couple of meetings, our membership has grown to nearly 30. Below is a picture of us at a Christmas party. It's just hard to resist a bunch of Divas in red hats!!
