Update from Pike 27: Pike 27 w/ Ritt Deitz @ Northside Tavern Saturday, February 25 10pm, free Spring, 1982. Two high school sophomores hit it off at a leadership conference for smart kids. They form a rock trio (The Qubes!), buy skinny silk ties at Chess King, and rock the Boone County High School party circuit. Kings, baby. 24 years later, we find The Qubes' lead singer, Ritt Deitz, traveling down from Madison, WI to promote his fourth and latest release, After The Mountains. And we find The Qubes drummer...well, that's me. (I played our first show wearing a Cincinnati Reds batting helmet. I'm still trying to come to grips with that.) Ritt is an exceptional singer/songwriter with a catalog full of smart, gritty, rocking folk. It's folk in the best sense of the term -- think acoustic Springsteen, Greg Brown, Mark Lanegan -- not horrifically lame ballads about puppies and sunsets. Check him out at www.rittdeitz.com. Ritt and his band will kick off the show at 10pm, we'll close it out. We won't likely be out for another couple months, so catch the shambolic express while you can. If you're in the Louisville area or in a traveling mood, Sean and I are opening for Ritt the night before (that's Friday, 2/24) at the Old Louisville Coffeehouse (8pm, but call in advance to check). People Still Say Nice Things About Us "Politically aware and joyously swaggering, Pike 27 are one of the best Roots Rock acts in Greater Cincinnati...Dig it: old Steve Earle, older Rolling Stones, that guy yelling about Noam Chomsky at the end of the bar." - Mike Breen, CityBeat "And that is exactly what was on display last night in a packed to the walls Mr. Pitiful's - pure, unalloyed rock 'n roll, played by sweating, hard drinking, intelligent, deadly serious, yet goofy, men...it has a whole lot to do with playing loud, good music while being true to yourself and adhering to your principles. It also has something to do with the firm belief that good music may indeed save the world, or at least your part of it. As the deliberate borrowing of a key line from Cheap Trick's "Surrender" goes in Pike's own "Closer To The Truth": We're all all right...the show blew the doors off of almost everything I've seen in the last year." -- Dale Johnson, I See Sound Love, Dave, for Sean, George, Tommy, & Mark -- dave purcell http://www.pike27.net/ Radio Free Newport: http://www.pike27.net/rfn/= ++ psychodots ++ Date: 06 Mar 2006 21:02:33 -0800 From: "David Ash" Subject: Cincinnati Post article with Fetters mention from the Cincinnati Post, 2/9/06, see http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060209/LIFE01/602090301/-1/all Freedom song earns world recognition Cincinnati has an active local music scene respected outside the area, but it has never been mistaken for a world music hotbed. Nigerian emigre Baoku Moses, who moved to town five years ago, is helping to put the area on the Afro beat map, now that he is a finalist in the world music category of the prestigious International Songwriting Contest. Moses' "Free Nigeria" from his 2004 locally released CD, "Okodoro Oro" ( "The Realistic Reality"), is one of 14 finalists in the category, which will be judged by a diverse panel of record company executives and noted musicians and songwriters that range from Loretta Lynn and Tom Waits to Steve Vai and Darryl McDaniels (Run DMC). Winners in 16 categories will be announced next month. There is also a separate fan voting contest. A grand prize-winner gets $10,000 with $1,000 awards going to category winners (www.songwritingcompetition.com; www.baokutcr.com). Moses, in a sense, has already won just by becoming a finalist out of some 15,000 song entries from 80 countries. "It's very, very exciting," Moses said this week, acknowledging that his song is "preaching a revolutionary message" and amounts to something of a history and political lesson about his native country, in which he implores its leaders to quit meddling in the affairs of other African states. Ironically, Moses' release is not readily available in his homeland. He says he has not been able to find a distributor that he "trusts." He thinks about 50 friends have the track in Nigeria and they keep asking, "When is it going to come?" Moses' clever use of a variety of native percussion instruments makes the CD a rare and invigorating polyrhythmic experience. Rooted in Afro pop, which combines African rhythms with traditional Western jazz, the CD has plenty of Cincinnati rock and jazz influences. It was produced by Rob Fetters (psychodots, the Bears), who plays guitar on all the tracks. Fetters has said working on the project was a challenge in adopting his power chord rock style to the nuances of Afro rhythms. The tune also features excellent Cincinnati horn players Randy Villars and Gary Winters. Moses, who teaches African drum lessons around town, hopes to perform some of his material at several gigs later this spring. He acknowledges it is difficult to field a 12- to 15-member group that the material requires. ++ psychodots ++ Date: 06 Mar 2006 21:17:31 -0800 From: "David Ash" Subject: Blog with Fetters mention Now that everybody and their mother-in-law has a web blog, you'd expect the occasional psychodots reference to pop up on some of them, wouldn't ya? Here's one at least, featuring a short review of Rob's solo acoustic opener set at Southgate House last month, plus a candid photo of Mr. Fetters in an, um, interesting pose: http://frontier.cincinnati.com/blogs/popculture/2006/02/rob-and-rob-at-southgate-house.asp In case you're reading this sometime in the future from an archive or something and that link doesn't work, here's the text of the portion concerning Fetters: Rob and Rob at the Southgate House, by Brian Butts: Saturday night, the gang and I went back to The Southgate House, this time to see Rob Dickinson. I knew very little about him other than listening to a few tracks of his on MySpace and that he was lead singer of Catherine Wheel (a band I was only vaguely familiar with). Rob's opening act was Raisins/Bears/Psychodots lead singer Rob Fetters. Rob did what he called a "35 minute career retrospective" playing a mix of songs from his past and songs from his new solo record, "Musician." His set was a lot of fun. With no band to back him up, Fetters played his older stuff which still packed a cynical punch, and his newer solo stuff that filled in some lighter moments. As most of you are aware, she's been in and out of treatment centers trying to overcome a severe crack problem. After an unsuccessful visit to a Florida treatment center in '04, she went into a severe downward spiral, spending several months in Lee's garage collecting dust, and hanging out with a bust of Beethoven, her condition worsening. Finally, about two months ago, Tom Rhein was able to talk her into seeking help in Cincinnati. Her treatment there seems to have been a success, and she is reportedly looking and feeling great. She will be making her first public appearance this Saturday night with Bucket at The Brickhouse in O'Brienville. Bucket member Bob Nyswonger says, "it'll be great to have her back., she always lights up a room." Drummer Powell ads, "I can't wait to see her and get down to some good, old fashioned hunch dancin'." Rolfes, still stinging a little from the huge electric bills Sissy and Beethoven racked up while staying in his garage says, "I just hope she can hold together this time."
