That was a great night of music! I'm only sorry that I didn't get a chance to meet Mr Elbel. Maybe the next time... Another BIG thanks goes to Ashley (did you get your DVD?) and the band for sharing a little Christmas joy via the mp3s. It was fantastic seeing SO MANY friends at the Southgate House show! I spent more time talking than I did watching the show, but it was a wonderful night of music and old acquaintences. It was great to see all of you... Merry Christmas... In the Cincinnati Post article preceding the Thanksgiving shows, it was mentioned that Bob plans to release a solo release early next year. I asked Bob about this recently and he replied thusly: "I've been slowly getting my solo disc together...I'm hoping to be done in January, out around the beginning of March? The next thing up for us is finishing the Bears record, which has been sitting 90% done for the past year...that will probably be done & out late spring / early summer, with hopefully some dates. [That] record is really going to be good...they let me go pretty wild on it." He also said, about the Dots, "I know that we'd like to play some more, so stay tuned for that." No mention of whether any of the recordings from the aborted psychodots "live in the studio" project will be used on Bob's album, but I'm wondering (pure speculation) if things like Dark Inside, Don't Bury Me, Voice Of Experience and Catherine The Great might turn up. Which would be a good thing. I heard this brandied about at the Southgate House show. It's definitely the most live-sounding, which is a theme often wistfully invoked by the faithful. My take is that all four Dots studio albums are really f-ing good, when you listen to them now. Sure, the first one seems overly burdened with sounding cutting-edge production-wise, maybe in reaction to proving themselves a viable independent entity in the wake of the Bears breakup. But it's hard to argue with the quality (and quantity, in retrospect) of the songs, which are top-notch. The Cincinnati Entertainment Awards returned to the Taft Theatre for the first time since the Afghan Whigs were inducted into the CEA Hall of Fame in 1998. It was also the first year the awards program was split to give both the theater and music communities their own ceremonies, enabling November's musical celebration to be expanded to feature longer performances from the local groups appearing (which included 500 Miles to Memphis, Czar*Nok, Heartless Bastards, Thee Shams, The Greenhornes and Marvin and the Experience). The peerless John Von Ohlen, a local Jazz giant, was inducted into the CEA Hall of Fame, while presenters included the likes of Bootsy Collins, Peter Frampton and new Mayor Mark Mallory. Despite the growing pains that came with moving the event to a much larger venue (hopefully the sound issues will be fixed next year), the CEA show was still the local music party of 2005 -- actually two parties, if you count the great post-show shindig at alchemize featuring a sweaty surprise set from psychodots. 25. The Bears didn't release new material this year, but an entertaining road movie about the band's comeback eased the jonesing for many fans. Fittingly, Out of Hibernation, crafted by a team of Chicago filmmakers, had its world premiere in Cincinnati in October. 26. Psychodots (The Bears minus Adrian Belew) did release new material this year. Instead of their usual one-off "we need Christmas money" shows around Thanksgiving, the 'dots put out Terminal Boulevard, their first disc of new material in a decade. Slightly looser and more rockin', the album shows the local Pop/Rock trio sounds better than ever. Likewise with the 'dots solo output -- Chris Arduser's The Celebrity Motorcade and Rob Fetters' Musician. __________________ There's more.... City Beat http://www.citybeat.com/current/musicspillit.shtml Spill It "A Very Local Music Christmas" by Mike Breen Sunday at 7 p.m., WVXU's local arts and culture program, Around Cincinnati, airs a two-hour holiday special that's sprinkled with plenty of holiday flavor (and, perhaps, nutmeg). Instead of culling the standard "White Christmas"/"Dogs Barking 'Jingle Bells' " tunes for the show, producers gathered an impressive lineup of local musicians to record songs in the station's studios. Artists like Over the Rhine, Chris Dunnett, psychodots, Ricky Nye, Bob Lotz, the Phil DeGreg Trio, the Steve Schmidt Trio, Greg Schaber, Katie Reider and the Faux Frenchmen cut fresh holiday chestnuts for the show, while Raison D'Etre, Jake Speed and the Freddies, Ekimi, Ed Cunningham, Vocal Arts Ensemble, Cincinnati Men's Chorus and the Adagio Trio provided previously-released cuts. Several of the musicians also recorded interviews, which have been used in the Around Cincinnati programs leading up to the holidays. The show also presents several theatrical and spoken word pieces, including Vice Mayor Jim Tarbell's reading of "The Night Before Christmas" and an original story from Raison D'Etre singer Roberta Schultz. The station's Web site, wvxu.org, has a special page set up in conjunction with the program, with photos from the recording sessions and other bonus features. ++ psychodots ++ Date: 22 Dec 2005 06:39:03 -0800 From: Mary Bosken Subject: Cincy Post 'dots mention..... I meant to write a longer review of the new album, with some context from the first three psychodots studio releases. And I'll probably get to finishing that eventually, but in the meantime, how 'bout some Depot discussion of this new CD? In a nutshell, I think it's great, produced perfectly, just a little short, and lacking some key unreleased psychodots tunes in favor of a couple (King, Terminal) that I'm glad to have recorded so well, but maybe don't consider in the same echelon as their very best compositions. But hey, that's just my own taste, and I stress again that it's so wonderful for the band to have made this that I don't want to quibble at all. What do you think? Dave p.s. The Southgate Thanksgiving show ranks among the top live shows I've seen. She Might Try was transformed from a very personal creation into an explosive band song (and even the interruption for Rob to retune couldn't break the momentum); Heaven, which was never my favorite off Musician, was likewise pushed to a new level; and the "greatest hits" sounded as fresh and powerful as ever before. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Thursday, December 22, 2005 5:22 PM Subject: Psycho Daily: Let's talk about the Blvd. > Date: Tue, 20 Dec 2005 23:58:11 -0500 > From: "David Ash" > Subject: Let's talk about the Blvd. > > There hasn't been a whole lot of dialog here on the Depot about the new > CD, > so I'll take it upon myself to be provocative about it in the hopes of > getting some of you long-time lurkers to pipe in (or the regulars, for > that > matter): > > Is it the best psychodots album of them all?
