But this year there's a twist. The trio of Bob Nyswonger, Rob Fetters and Chris Arduser are also releasing a new CD, Terminal Boulevard, their first in a decade. While some of the band members' recent solo outings have been used to branch out sonically and conceptually (Fetters' Musician was his most aurally experimental release yet, while Arduser's The Celebrity Motorcade centered around an "old Hollywood" theme), Terminal Boulevard finds the trio coming home to their straightforward, hook-drenched, wit-and-wisdomed trademark. While as crisp as ever, the feel is loose and largely rockin' and there's no George Harrison-like elbowing for writing space on Boulevard -- each member contributes three songs apiece to the nine-cut disc. Nyswonger's superb "Disposable Man" sets the no-nonsense tone, kicking the album off with a Kinks-like stomp. "The Problem Song" has a classic vibe, with Fetters mixing surging melodies with some awesomely angular guitar riffage, while the chunking "Not a Pretty Face" is the latest in Fetters' ongoing outpouring of Sarcastic Pop, with lines like "I found a way that could save the human race/But they ain't gonna hear it 'cause I'm not a pretty face." It's not all balls-out: The gently swaying, acoustic-based "My Friend the King," shuffles with the emotive, melancholic grace of some of Fetters' finest songs (like "Dave" from The Bears' Car Caught Fire album) and provides one of the disc's highlights, while Arduser's "Instead of the Bottle" is like an old tear-in-my-beer Country slow dance with the twang and hokey-ness sapped out. Terminal Boulevard is classic psychodots with all of the elements firmly in place that fans have come to love: amazing musicianship, singing, songwriting, production, etc. With new "product" on the shelves, this album could be a sign there will be more than just one gig a year from this tremendous trio. 859-431-2201.
