Greetings Underground and Friends of Faux Frenchmen; In the 'Ain't Recognition Magnifique' department, we Faux Frenchmen have been nominated for a Cincinnati Entertainment Award in the Jazz category. Cast your ballot at http://citybeat.com/cea/ untilOctober 24. And, a second sheepish apology for the just plain wrong Studio 89 info of previous emails. Thus far the two telecast dates we've been given have proven incorrect. Not that we have anything against Screaming Mimes or Willy Porter . . . .We still fully expect KET television to air our performance some Sunday at 1am, but as far as the date goes, you're on your own. Just like us. And of course, for three years running now, Faux Frenchmen every Monday at Tink's in Clifton, 6:30pm. Did anyone make it to The Bears "Out of Hibernation" world premier? If so, how was it/how was it attended? 2. Is anyone else as bummed as me about the benefit-Raisins reunion being canceled? No disrespect for Erma Jean intended. 3. Did anyone attend any of Rob's recent performances? If so, any news/new songs from the new 'dot disc get a try? 4. Anyone have any further details on the aforementioned disc? 5. Anyone making plans for heading to the Chicago show? Me, I'm mulling it over and trying to figure out how to make all three shows and live to tell about it. OK. I'm getting psyched for November. can ya tell? If you're familiar with the output of any of his other bands at all, that attitude shouldn't be all that surprising. It's not so much that his whole life flashed before he crashed (to paraphrase a Fetters' lyric) as much as almost his whole life up to now grabbed him and stared him in the face. And, while not thrilled with everything he saw there, he's at least learning to make a prickly truce with it. Fetters welcomes us to his life as it is right now in the opening lines of the first track, "Clown" - "I used to want to be a rock star, used to wanna be black/but I found my true calling when I slipped= through the cracks - I'm a clown". This is a guy who has entered a new phase of his life, and he's giving it a test drive, but, the wheel shimmies a little and he hasn't decided whether he can live with that yet. Lyrically, the tone of the album is matter-of-fact - "Hey, this is the way life is and this is how I feel about it. Sorry if you don't like it. Well, not that sorry." But, if that's the headline - "FETTERS: 'LIFE BLOWS SOMETIMES'" - the sarcastic, eloquent devil is in the details. "Life Is Hard", which is only the third track, is almost a superfluous statement after "Clown" and "Zero" ("Maybe I should feel sorry for you, but I can't feel anything", Fetters tells us as all equations add up to naught in that one). Fetters reminds me of a suicide prevention hotline volunteer that doesn't really discourage you from offing yourself, but, at least he makes you laugh and exhibits good musical taste while he's on the phone with you. The sad, beautiful and frankly scary "Malcolm and Margerie" says a lot without saying much. "Gin, tequila...Margerie", Fetters sketches, and then later tells us, "I love hell/I can't wait to go back. There's quite a bit left up to interpretation there, and that's just the way Fetters - and we - like it. It's like a Raymond Carver story put to music. And, of course, Fetters is a master of the lyrical one liner: My sister is a dancer and my brother's a pimp/they made a dirty movie starring Zippy the Chimp/and a clown - "Clown" Sooner or later, you'll run out of money/and right after that, you'll run out of friends - "Trailerpark Bob" Fetters has proven himself to be a guitar virtuoso in the past, and on Musician, he doesn't disappoint. As a matter of fact, he's a little looser and more expressive than on the last Bears' CD. The lovely Spanish guitar interlude in "Tell The Truth", for example, isn't showy - as sometimes Spanish guitar interludes can be - but functions as a much-needed short vacation for the song's protagonist. And on "Slave", he just lets rip in time-honored fashion that he's known for "round these here parts. He's joined on the disc by fellow "Psychoraisinbeardots" Chris Arduser (on a few tracks) and Bob Nyswonger (on four songs), as well as Dan Walzer (drums on one track), and, other than Paul Patterson on violin on "Malcolm and Margerie" and Brenda Lipscomb on back up vocals on "Life Is Hard", Fetters did everything else himself, which seems fitting for a guy who sings in the closing track "Heaven" - "I've got a long way to go/I don't really want to take it slow." Maybe that wheel shimmy worked itself out after all. Or maybe Fetters has more important things on his mind than minor kinks. I grew up in Sylvania, Ohio with my talented friends Chris Arduser and Bob Nyswonger and we have played music and recorded together for a long, long time under different banners, with additional musicians - but when it gets down to the core trio, well, we call that group psychodots.... psychodots have just completed our first studio album in 10 years: "Terminal Blvd." to be released November 22, 2005. If you'd like us send you an EARLY AUTOGRAPHED ( yes - all three dots ) COPY of the disc mailed USPS 1st class by November 17th, get out your checkbooks and visit either: www.psychodots.com - or - www.thebearsmusic.com - and follow the directions from your bank account...to mine. Otherwise, in the weeks following it will be available at the usual Cincinnati indy record stores, as well as CDbaby.com, and also at our Annual Thanksgiving gigs in Cincinnati, Dayton, and Chicago - outlets that will allow you to use credit cards securely. At that point there will also be downloads available for sampling, and typical 21st century cyberdadagaga, but it will cost a couple bucks more to order. iTunes and the like will have it up in 2 months or so.
