Saturday performers in the ballroom include (in order of appearance): Giant Wow, Tonefarmer, The Evil Queens, Echo3charlie, Kelp and Le TechnoPuss13s. In the parlor: Matthew Shadley band, Soul in the Shade, Beau Alquizola, Venus Mission and 7-speed. The Sunday ballroom lineup: Rob Fetters, Travelin' Barefoot, Nurse, Kelly Thomas and the Fabulous Pickups and the Kentucky Struts. In the parlor: Mike Detmer, Toasty Grandpa, Patrick Ewing and Malahida. Donations of $5 to $20 are requested for the Red Cross. Upcoming hurricane relief shows are planned for Oct. 9 at the Blue Note, Price Hill, and Oct. 16 at Jefferson Hall, Over-the-Rhine. Further into the column........ 20/20 Bears: "The Bears: Out of Hibernation" DVD documentary has a showing 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Cincinnati MainStreet Cinema as one of the many events at the 20/20 arts showcase festival. The film was made by Chicagoan David Carlson, a Bears fan who followed around the four members - Adrian Belew, Rob Fetters, Chris Arduser, Bob Nyswonger -two years ago on their first tour in 15 years. Unfortunately, it's a documentary that fails to tell much of a story. If there is a theme, it's that rock 'n' roll can be pretty mundane when a band is off stage. We see the Bears' joyous power pop sets, and watch them order donuts and get stuck in traffic. The happy-go-lucky guys mostly smile through it all and ham it up for the camera, showing they are just happy that fans still want to see some middle-age rockers. It's probably a documentary most appreciated by die-hard fans. ++ psychodots ++ Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 21:09:36 -0400 From: Mary Bosken Subject: City Beat/CEA's It's that time of year again - the 2005 CEA's. McGurk Enquirer staff writer Filmmaker David Carlson learned something unexpected about some Cincinnati rock icons when he made the documentary "The Bears: Out of Hibernation." "Like (Rob) Fetters says in the movie, they are a lot like a bear," said Carlson. "They can be soft and cuddly and fun to go to bed with, or they can rip your head off." Carlson's film makes its world premiere today at University of Cincinnati's MainStreet Cinema as part of the 20/20 arts celebration. Original band members Fetters, Bob Nyswonger and Chris Arduser (aka the Raisins and Psychodots) are expected to be on hand. The fourth Bear, guitarist Adrian Belew, is on tour.) The decision to film the re-formed band was easy. "I've been a big fan of the Bears forever, and of Adrian Belew for longer," said the Chicago-based Carlson. "Guys like Belew and Fetters, they do interesting things ..." Another local rock documentary, "Dead On" by award-winning film artist John Parker, will close 20/20 on Oct. 19, also at MainStreet Cinema. With help of producers Jerry Adams and George Forste, Parker compiled live performances by some three dozen local performers that he deemed worthy of more attention than they get. "Jim Cole is a good example," said Parker. "This guy's been in the Cincinnati scene since the late '70s; I don't think he's ever been nominated for anything, but he's got like 30 years of experience playing and producing." His band, the Cole Brothers, is slated to play live after the Oct. 19 screening, along with Abiyah, Buckra and the Tigerlilies. The film series will also include "Is It Really So Strange," about Southern California Latino fans of the British group the Smiths, at 6 p.m. Oct. 14. The twosome hatched the idea for "Rock Together" after trying to come up with a way to raise cash for the victims of hurricane Katrina. Through a Web site (rocktogether.org), performers from around the world can set up charity shows in their own cities and link them to "Rock Together" to get maximum attention. The goal is to raise a cumulative $100,000 from artists worldwide for hurricane relief. Of course, Meloy and Lispcomb are doing their own groundwork here in Greater Cincinnati. On Saturday and Sunday, "Rock Together" takes over the stages at Newport's Southgate House for a two-night benefit. Among the local participants Saturday: Le TechnoPUSS13s, Tonefarmer, Kelp, Mike Detmer, Matthew Shadley Band, Venus Mission, Giant Wow, Beau Alquizola and 7 Speed Vortex. Sunday, locals like Kentucky Struts, Patrick Ewing, Travelin' Barefoot and Rob Fetters perform.
