That is all I can say. See ya, Kevin ++ psychodots ++ Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 01:22:32 -0400 From: "David Ash" Subject: New psychodots album! Is everyone out there as floored as I am by Rob's announcement of a new psychodots studio album, to be released late November? My little fevered brain immediately started racing: is it the completion and release of the infamous abandoned 1996 live-in-the-studio cuts? Is it the same songs recorded then (rumored to be: Voice Of Experience, Catherine The Great, I Hope It Works Out, You Will Never Be Satisfied, Across the White House Lawn, Don't Bury Me, Old Fashioned Girl, Dark Inside, I Didn't Want To Kill You, The Problem Song, My Red Truck, Worry No More, The Great Communicator, and Disposable Man) redone, maybe along with some new ones? Well, I now have it from a reliable source, one legitimately external to my fevered little brain, that work is just starting on the album this week, and it will be quick and simple. The 1996 tracks will likely never surface. This is a fresh start on material the band feels was never recorded properly, with the possibility of a few surprises emerging. That's all I've got, but it sounds like enough to infer that many of the classics included in the list above will be on this disc. In any case, whatever's on the thing, it can only be seen as an unexpected gift, from a band that barely still exists, whose members have just released solo albums, are almost done with another Bears record, and play with several other local bands that actually perform regularly in public. And yet they still want to give us those songs! It's almost enough to convert my heathen ass. But not quite. Dave p.s. If they change their minds on the "quick" part, and it doesn't come out in time for the Thanksgiving shows, and then gets delayed further, and then starts to sound like the 1996 tease all over again, it might be enough to kill me. It almost did back then, and now I'm 25 lbs. heavier and 9 years older, and who knows how the insides of my coronary arteries are looking? Take pity on me, mssrs. F, N and A, and keep your word on this one! ++ psychodots ++ Date: Wed, 21 Sep 2005 11:34:46 -0400 From: Mary Bosken Subject: Fetters mention....... City Beat Spill It, by Mike Breen Riding 'Rails' http://www.citybeat.com/current/musicspillit.shtml Three things occur annually without fail. The seasons change, your taxes are due in April, and Maurice Mattei puts out some kind of collection of his singular "Acoustic Rock" songs. Welcome the 2005 edition, Dead Rails, which Mattei released earlier this month. On Thursday, Mattei plays a "post-release" show at the Northside Tavern with Rob Fetters, no slouch in the prolific department himself, having already released a solo album this year (Musician), with upcoming releases from his bands psychodots and The Bears (who also have a road documentary premiering next month), plus a plethora of solo shows, 'dots gigs and a Raisins reunion (Oct. 30 at the 20th Century) on the horizon. Mattei's individual efforts have rarely strayed from his solo, acoustic-guitar-and-vocals-only sonic motif, and Dead Rails is no different. His albums are all about the songs, which contain vivid, familiar settings and esoteric characters, delivered with sturdy melodies and backed by Mattei's strident strumming, which sounds especially full-bodied on Rails. But it's the engaging lyrical content that makes Mattei's work desirable (I mean, who would listen to a solo acoustic album full of bad lyrics?). Mattei says he wrote these songs after several months of not writing anything; once he got started, they poured out with ease. That's reflected in the cohesive fluidity of the disc. Listening to the album is similar to reading James Joyce's The Dubliners; while each tale doesn't necessarily interconnect, the textures are consistent and you often feel like the stories could have each taken place on the same block. In his distinct nasal rasp, Mattei takes the listener through the where-are-they-now resignation of "Whatever Happened to George?," the seedy house of freaks and degenerates of "Old Detroit," the vintage Blues-like pining of "My Baby Left Here Walkin' " and the snapshots of lecherous old codgers in "Someday, That'll Be Me" and "You'd Be Wrong." While some of Mattei's earlier albums are inhabited by characters so salacious you feel like taking a shower after a listen, the vibe of Dead Rails is a little more empathetic and mature; you feel for these people, perhaps because you feel like you might someday be one of them.
