Toledo Blade http://www.toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050818/ART10/ 508180329 All-day event aids School for the Arts Article published Thursday, August 18, 2005 Local music - lots of it - will be featured all day long Saturday at Centennial Terrace for the first-ever "Concert For Culture" benefit for the Toledo School for the Arts. Fifteen bands, including three that are made up of school members or alums, are scheduled to take the stage beginning at noon and playing until midnight. One of the event's organizers, Dave Gierke, the school's director of development, said the concert is designed as much to raise awareness of the school and expose the students to a variety of different kinds of music as it is to bring in money. "Rather than have another has-been band at a parking lot thing, I wanted to have something that would introduce culture to my kids," he said. At the same time, he wanted a lineup that would draw grown-ups to the show as well as kids, which is where E.J. Wells and the Bleeding Deacons and the Psychodots come in. Wells is a veteran of Toledo's music scene with one album to his credit, and the Psychodots are a Cincinnati-based band of Sylvania natives who have been successful on the alternative scene. Gierke, a long-time drummer in a number of northwest Ohio bands, said he's always had respect for Wells and the members of the Psychodots - Rob Fetters, Chris Arduser, and Bob Nyswonger - because they've always written and played their own music. "They're all about my age [45], but I was a lot more musically immature than those guys," he said. "They were like paupers and I wasn't because I was playing six nights a week playing stuff like 'Funky Cold Medina.'! The bands for Saturday's concert range in style from rap and psychobilly to pop and hard rock. Here's the lineup and performance times for the rain-or-shine show: Jude the Obscure, 12:30 p.m.; Uncertain 5, 1 p.m.; Jolly Molly, 1:45 p.m.; Boogaloosa Prayer, 2:15 p.m.; Jeff Stewart, 3 p.m.; Amanna 18, 3:30 p.m.; Phantasmagoria, 4:15 p.m.; StereoMod, 4:45 p.m.; Gibran Soul, 5:30 p.m.; Karl D and APB, 6 p.m.; MC Habitat, 6:45 p.m.; Damien, 7:30 p.m.; Four on the Floor, 8:15 p.m.; E.J. Wells and the Bleeding Deacons, 8:45 p.m.; and the Psychodots, 10 p.m.. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 the night of the show. They can be purchased at Culture Clash, Freon Beats, or Manhattan's Restaurant. Centennial Terrace is at 5773 Sylvania Rd. Or some such small-minded promotion-driven drivel. Well, we Flammables have decided to claim that homeless, tax-deductible consonant just floating around the Pop Music ether for our Saturday, August 27 Rohs Street Caf performance. See us for perhaps for certainly one night only under our new handle, the Pflammables, in Clifton on Rohs Street, just about where MacMillan meets Clifton Avenue, across MacMillan from Hughes High School. Host Greg Mahan starts the show at 9pm, and were up by 9:30. Now, if youll excuse me, I have to go re-detail the band van. Just keepin it real, yall . . . . . Pike 27 @ Midpoint Music Festival Saturday, September 24 Mr. Pitiful's - midnight Homeys and Comrades, Long time, no speak. We didn't intend to take this much time off, it just turned out that way. We've been offered some great shows, but had to turn them down, mostly due to my school schedule and George's [Cunningham] recovery from his post-election self-immolation (he's better now). But...we're back! Here's some advance warning. We'll be at Mr. Pitiful's on Saturday, September 24 for a Midpoint Music Festival showcase. We're part of a great lineup including Tim Lee, an underground legend from the late-80s who has worked with Wilco, Blue Mountain, Let's Active, and Mitch Easter, among others, and locals 500 Miles To Memphis, who are currently touring behind their fine new record. More details in a spam closer to the date. In the meantime, pick up a copy of "Stumblingham," George's excellent instrumental release. You can find details here. And stop by Pleasant Perk Coffee in Pleasant Ridge on Sat, Sept. 3 (8-10pm) to see George & Jon Schmidt lay it down (I may stop by to sit in and bring down the level of musicianship). Hope you make it out to the Midpoint show. They're always a blast.
