Hey all If someone hasn't already passed this your way, it's my pleasure to bring it to your attention. Go thru all of 'em if you have a couple minutes to spare. To those of you that don't reside in the Greater Cincy area, there's this place called the Solid Rock Church in Mason, OH (a small community north of the city) and there's this 50-foot Jesus out front that really gets your attention when you're driving past it on I-75. Ashley ++ psychodots Date: 15 Jul 2005 10:49:01 -0700 From: "David Ash" Subject: Belew article from Lexington newspaper >From the Lexington Herald Leader Friday, July 15, 2005 Guitarist experiments with sound, visuals on new albums By Walter Tunis CONTRIBUTING MUSIC WRITER Adrian Belew has long marveled at the links between the art he creates on a canvas and the music he can send screaming from a guitar. Granted, the Covington native is best-known for the latter. Since the late '70s, his encyclopedia of guitar sounds -- which can resemble everything from a seagull to a freight train to a charging elephant -- has graced records by Frank Zappa, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Paul Simon and Laurie Anderson, among others. Then there are the solo recordings he has released since the early '80s that shift from Beatle-esque pop to abstract instrumentals. And let's not overlook what has been perhaps Belew's most visible vehicle for experimentation: his 24-year tenure in the prog-rock band King Crimson. But take a glance at the first two of three solo records Belew is releasing this year -- Side One and Side Two (Side Three should hit stores this fall). Each bears Belew's art on the cover, making them calling cards of sorts for fans who didn't know he could create with a paintbrush as well as a guitar. "I always think of myself more as a painter when I'm making a solo record," said Belew, who performs tonight at Bogart's in Cincinnati. "They're very similar art forms. With one, you paint on a canvas. With the other, you paint in the air. "Of course I've had no training in any of this. I just picked up a guitar and figured out what notes to play. It's been the exact same with painting. I have no idea what I'm doing. But that can give you a kind of freedom. When you don't know the rules, you're free to break them." Search past the cover of Belew's new recordings, and you will discover a wealth of musical invention. Side One, which was released in January, abounds with brutish power trio rock 'n' roll with help from bass pioneer Les Claypool and Tool drummer Danny Carey. Side Two, which spotlights guitar textures and groove music, came out Tuesday. But Side One's more aggressive works, along with music from Belew's 1997 album Op Zop Too Wah (which, until now, he has never performed live), will form the repertoire he plans to take on the road for much of this year while King Crimson, he said, "is quiet." While Claypool and Carey have returned to their own bands, Belew found their collaboration an inspiration in setting up his newest trio. "The first time I ever played with Les, I noticed his band would play a song, then they would go off and be free with it for awhile before coming back and ending it. It's not unlike what jazz musicians have done all their lives. That was one of the early indicators to me that, 'Wow, I can do this.'" Belew's touring trio includes Mike Gallaher, a jazz guitarist-turned-bassist, and drummer Mike Hodges, a longtime friend who accompanied the guitarist in a backup band for a Bowie world tour in 1990. While Belew hoped to assemble a group of his own years ago, other projects kept popping up. King Crimson, for example, reactivated itself in 1999 and toured extensively behind two recent albums (2000's The ConstruKction of Light and 2003's The Power to Believe). In between came two more records (2001's Car Caught Fire and 2002's Live) with The Bears, the Cincinnati-based pop trio Belew has worked with on and off for over two decades. Bears members Rob Fetters and Chris Arduser, in fact, will open tonight's concert. Even the releases of Side One and Side Two have had to share the spotlight with new albums by younger prog-rock proteges Belew contributed guitar colors to: Porcupine Tree's Deadwing and Man on Fire's Habitat. And if that weren't enough, Virgin Records last spring reissued Stage, an extraordinary 1978 concert album by Bowie that features Belew in full guitar fury. "A few years back (King Crimson leader) Robert Fripp and I decided to play full time with Crimson and put everything else on the back burner. We did that for about three years solid. Then I thought it would be fun to get the Bears back together, as that band has always been very fruitful for me. But all of that, quite unwittingly, put my solo material out to pasture. "So now has turned into the time to go back to my own music. And it's working out so well." if you go: Adrian Belew When: 8:30 tonight. Where: Bogart's, 2621 Vine St. in Cincinnati. Punk bands shredding the stage. DJs burning up turntables. Celebrity skateboarders mocking gravity. When Rob Fetters and his son, Sam Fetters, plunged into the world of the Vans Warped Tour together last year, they spied something that might shock some people who've never attended the annual festival of music and extreme sports: Lots of families. "Of course, the moms and dads had tattoos and piercings," says Sam Fetters, 14, whose 10-year-old brother, Noah, will tag along with him and his father this year at Warped Tour. The nationally touring festival, which features sets by the Offspring, the Dropkick Murphys, My Chemical Romance and dozens more bands, stops Friday at Riverbend Music Center. Since its inception in 1995, Warped Tour has carved out a niche as a safe, cool summer outing for families who love to rock. Scores of young festival-goers drop off the 'rents at reverse daycare, which provides air-conditioned respite, movies and massages for moms and dads. The dynamic music and adrenaline-charged sports demonstrations lure some adults out of the reverse daycare tent. Michael Weissbuch of Montgomery, who describes himself as a '50s and '60s rock guy, got hooked on ska music when he attended the 2003 Warped Tour with his son, Casey. The Warped Tour experience stirred Michael so much that he's planning to celebrate his 58th birthday at the festival with his wife, Debbe. "They're not going to be hanging out with me or anything, though," says Casey, 16. If you're planning a multigenerational jaunt, check out these tips from local parents and kids. Be prepared The festival runs for eight hours, so make sure to stock your survival kit with sunblock, rain ponchos, ear protection and a charged-up cell phone. Wear comfortable shoes "It's a long day," says Rob Fetters, a Sayler Park musician who plays with the Psychodots and the Bears. He and his sons will be sporting kicks made by tour sponsor Vans, a longtime favorite shoemaker for musicians and extreme sports athletes. Bring lots of cash Shelling out for bottles of water, snacks, T-shirts, CDs and other necessities can deplete your reserves quickly, and lines at the ATMs tend to be long. Don't forget to tote a bag in which to stow your loot, too. Split up Debra Disney, 50, of Middletown drove up to the Warped Tour's Columbus stop last month to see her 23-year-old son, Casey Calvert, perform with his up-and-coming band, Hawthorne Heights. "A lot of parents all hung out together while their kids were doing their own thing," she says. She suggests that families check in every two hours or so. Keep moving With more than 80 artists playing on multiple stages, you'll want to circulate so you can catch as many acts as possible. "I just stay for a song or two, unless I hear something I really like," says Michael Weissbuch. Make it an educational experience Rob Fetters of Syler Park plans to point out the Warped Tour artists' great musical moves to his sons Sam, a budding guitarist, and Noah, who is learning to play the drums. Know that some acts deserve a PG-13 rating Minutes after Charlie Brown and his 9-year-old, Evan, walked into Riverbend last year, a Warped Tour artist blitzed his audience with the f-bomb. The Kenwood man and his son discussed the likelihood of hearing rough language on the drive over, however, so it didn't overly darken the day. Keep your mind and ears open Charlie and Evan Brown didn't know the music of most of the artists on the 2004 Warped Tour bill, nor are they familiar with the groups that made this year's lineup. "We don't go for the bands - we go for the experience," says Charlie, 39. "We had a great time last year seeing a million different kinds of people and hearing a million different bands."
