Or is he? Fans of the Cincinnati guitar hero can judge for themselves in Fetters' wonderful new solo album, "Musician," to be released next week. The veteran musician/singer/songwriter of the Raisins, psychodots and the Bears is at his clever best with his second solo album. It is accomplished adult-pop songwriting, alternating between delightfully dark to the quirky and whimsical. It all starts with a very unFetters-like song called "Clown," with moody lyrics, but couched in a buoyant, almost show tune-like sound, as Fetters darkly sings, "I found my true calling when I slipped through the cracks - I'm a Clown." It is a melancholy - almost creepy - song where one expects the ax murderer in this "clown" to pop out of the song about a guy with a sordid childhood trying to hide it. It turns out to be the perfect opener for this album about adult insecurities in a production that is accomplished and self-assured. "I think a lot of people look at me in the band as sort of the buffoon. I'm real high energy. I do blow up a balloon on stage and use it to play guitar," Fetters said. "Anyone who knows me knows it goes a little deeper than that." Fetters does go deep on the album, turning over plenty of emotional rocks exploring adult fears and pet peeves that range from a rant about an "accountant from hell" on "Zero" to his dreamy metaphysical take about heaven on Earth in "Heaven." Perhaps the centerpiece is Fetters' "Trailerpark Bob," a Springsteen-esque anthem that salutes "Everyman." It is a complicated rock opus that is a tremendous sing-a-long, if one so chooses, as it both pines for and mocks the simple life. As Fetters sings of his working-class hero "Bob" - "If he weren't so humble, he'd think he was a god." Fetters has outdone himself on production with an orchestral feel. This is heavily textured music with piano, harmonica, computer sampling and violin to go with his trademark searing guitar work. There are plenty of Beatles-esque influences, lots of psychedelic tricks and sounds and more experimental moments than is typical from the power pop rocker. It's as if Fetters has moved into his "Sergeant Pepper" period with warm complex production, and plenty of dark characters with secrets. Fetters acknowledges his elaborate production is a product of his day job scoring various jingles, videos and films at Sound Images studio, downtown. "Todd Rundgren said long ago at a certain point you learn how to play the studio as if it were an instrument," Fetters said. "Basically, living and working every day in a studio has had an impact." The album is a must-listen for fans who have followed Fetters' brilliant 25-year Cincinnati music career. It is available online at www.psychodots.com or at Everybody's and Shake it Records. Fetters' psychodot/Bears bandmate, Chris Arduser, is releasing his own solo album in a couple weeks. In honor of the two CDs, the psychodots will perform a rare gig at the Southgate House May 7. ++ psychodots ++ Date: 28 Apr 2005 17:32:15 -0700 From: "Kevin McKeehan" Subject: fetters.2 Hey folks, For anyone interested here's the track listing for Robs new disc: 1. clown 2. zero 3. life is hard 4.
