Nye Cincinnati Post Thursday, January 13, 2005 http://www.cincypost.com/living/ All-stars to jam for Blues in the Schools by Rick Bird A fine gathering of local blues players, including an all-star guitar jam, will highlight the first Blues in the Schools Benefit from 4-9:30 p.m. Sunday at Fat Fish Blue, Newport on the Levee. All proceeds benefit the Cincy Blues Society's Blues in the Schools (BITS) program, which sends musicians to local schools for presentations and performances introducing students to the indigenous American music form. Admission, $10, with reserved tables available; (859) 261-4401; www.cincyblues.org. It might be a case where the evening's highlight will be the first act, with what's billed as the "Cincy Guitar Pull," featuring three of the area's finest blues rock guitarists who have never jammed together -- Sonny Moorman (Sonny Moorman group), Chris Carero (Blue Lou) and Marcos Sastre (Bluebirds). Also joining the jam is guitarist Steve Priestle. A second session features the BITS Blues Jam with many of the musicians who give the school presentations, including Jerry Hedge, Todd Hepburn, Ricky Nye, John Redell and Cheryl Renee. Also performing will be Michael Locke & the Repeat Offenders. Blues legend Big Joe Duskin is also scheduled to appear, although recent health problems may prevent him from performing. The Cincy Blues Society puts on some two dozen school presentations a year, but organizers would like to double that. "There is more demand than we can supply. Each year there are about 50 area schools that request programs," said Jeff Craven, Blues Society spokesman. "There is only so much you can ask of the musicians." Money raised goes toward educational materials and pays a small stipend for musicians who conduct the presentations, which expose kids to the historical origins of the blues and demonstrates how relevant the music is today with its influences on hip hop and rock. The group uses part of any profits from the annual summer Cincy Blues Fest to help fund the BITS program, but that can be shaky since the event does not always turn a profit. Craven noted that arts funding has all but dried up because of the city's recent economic woes and said such benefits are more important than ever. The blues group is also facing a money crunch to keep the gospel portion of the annual festival alive, since the city has pulled funding that made the additional gospel stage possible. "At this point, we are dead in the water on gospel," Craven said, adding the group is exploring other funding possibilities for the stage. This year's Cincy Blues Fest will be July 29-30. ++ psychodots ++ End of Psycho Depot 402 Jan 14, 2005 Comments, suggestions, postings, and administrative or the switch between digest and daily versions of the Depot (or be on both!): Mike Brown depot @ psychodots.com To order psychodot merchandise: contact Stan Hertzman of Umbrella Artists and Strugglebaby Records shertzman@cinci.rr.com 513 871-1500 Voice 513 871-1510 Fax and Hal Bernard Enterprises, Inc., 2612 Erie Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45208 For back issues (2 ways): Email: Tony Nowikowski tony@nowikowski.com or Web Site: http://home.insightbb.com/~p-dots/ Check out the psychodot Home Page at: http://www.psychodots.com Check out the graveblankets Home Page at: http://graveblankets.com Check out the Bears Home Page at: http://www.thebearsmusic.com Check out the Ricky Nye Home Page at: http://www.rickynye.com
