Wow - what a couple of shows. I'm not sure I could physically stand a 3rd night without some longer down time! I can't remember the last time I posted to the list, but this week pulled me out of hibernation. The Canal street show was a barnburner, one that I couldn't see how it could possibly be outdone. The show was great for it's spontaneity, miscues, banter and more of an edge by the band and great participation by the fans. It seems like the last few years the crowd in front of the stage has been a bit subdued. I almost felt like a bit of a loaner when I started hopping about-not on Wed. It was like the holiday, heat and anticipation for the 'dots drove the crowd into this hopping, drinking, swaying mass in front of the stage. Hell, when was the last time money was being thrown at the band!? It was simply awesome. I just didn't think it possible that Friday's show could top it, but I'll say it at least equaled it if not bettered it. The sound was much better, the miscues from Wed vanished and the band just absolutely tore up the place. On the floor it seemed like the energy could not be as good as Wed, but the band flat out drove people to the point where we were all jumping, pumping our fists and singing like it was day 1. The music was so intense it got me to thinking over the years what I would consider the best guitar solos of all time. An impossible task? Well I'll throw these out to ya an you can be the judge. These guitar riffs are the type that make you uncontrollably play air guitar, jump up and down and scream in the car leaving you're kids wondering just what the hell is wrong with Dad: 1. Psychodots-Rob Fetters-Mattress Live: There's no doubt, anybody who has listened to this song performed live cannot deny it is one of the top guitar solos in rock n' roll. The combination with Bob's base countering the riffs and Chris's hard driving sticks makes you wonder how 3 guys can produce an incredible wall of sound like that. 2. Peter Frampton-Do you feel like we do Live: ya gotta give Frampton his due on this tune. Between the voice box and blasting guitars at the end of the song, it's good. 3. Boston-Tom Scholz-Foreplay/Longtime: In classic form, TS builds a song up from acoustic guitars and then just flat out kills you with that electric guitar for a solo that makes your teeth white. Makes you try to hit Brad Delp's high notes! 4. Los Lobos-Don't worry Baby;: can't think of how to properly spell the guys names in the band, but just play this song and right from the start the guitar grabs me and makes me want to find a beer for a mike and dark sunglasses to wear. Awesome 5. Rush-Spirit of Radio: There is a great solo in this song that puts a smile on my face every time I hear it 6. Brian Lovely-Scorpio: If you don't have his "Superimposed" cd, get it and check out this song. It puts so much of whats out there to shame, and the lyrics are just tool cool. 7. George Benson-California PM Live: ok, so it's not rock, but put this on and crank up the volume and if you like great solos you'll hear Benson at his best. 8. VanHalen, Eddie VanHalen-Eruption/Runnin with the Devil: The only other 3 pc band (no, I don't count DLR because he didn't play an instrument) that can put out the kind of sound like the dots. No where in the same league from a songwriting standpoint, but the guitars are something else on these songs. 9. U2-New York, Edge-I discovered this on U2's last album, and it is an absolute wall of fantastic sound. Closest song to the energy of Mattress yet. So, there you have it. The shows got me going to post and maybe it will stir some comments. Add some of your own so I can pick up something else to listen to. Later.
