Cincinnati Post Thursday, October 21, 2004 http://www.cincypost.com/2004/10/21/rock102104.html Local bands Sound Off for Kerry By Rick Bird Post staff writer There is a landmark gathering tonight of the local music tribe in more ways than one. For the first time in memory local musicians are performing at a benefit for an overtly political cause. More than 20 local acts will be playing tonight at the Southgate House, Newport for what's billed "Sound Off for Kerry," a fundraiser for Democratic get out the vote efforts. Politics aside, it is also a significant night for local music fans. For the first time ever, three of Cincinnati's most beloved and legendary bands over the last 15 years will be sharing the same stage on the same night -- Over the Rhine, the Ass Ponys and the psychodots. Also on hand is another local legend: Jerry Springer, who is expected to make what should be the only real speech of the evening. "It is a cool thing," said Dave Morrison of the Ass Ponys about the pro-Kerry effort. "In the past the collective attitude within the music community was to sort of laugh at their own apathy. I don't know if it's a sign the times are bad or whether people didn't feel strong enough about something to put their name on it. The music community has always been good supporting charities. I can't really remember anything where politics was the reason everybody was getting together." The event was organized by Laura Chenault, a freelance video production manager and former member of several local bands including the Graveblankets. She has also done extensive volunteer work for the Kerry campaign this fall. "I was tired of some of the negative anti-Bush concerts. A lot of us really like John Kerry," she said. "I thought we could do an acoustic set with four or five bands. A lot have come out of the closet as Kerry supporters." Chenault said she had over 40 groups contact her about playing the benefit. "It hit a huge nerve," Chenault said. "I told them the good news is the response is overwhelming. The bad news is the response is overwhelming. Unfortunately it's only one night and not everyone's going to be able to be included. I didn't mean to offend anyone." Psychodots lead singer/guitarist Rob Fetters, who was a Bush supporter until shortly after 9/11 when he became alarmed the President was turning the response to the terrorist attack into his own religious crusade, said the band has rarely been politically active. "No, we aren't that overt. My guitar doesn't kill fascists," Fetters said with a laugh referring to the inscription Woody Guthrie had on his guitar. "We just want to play for what's really important." Fetters said there are a few tunes in the 'dot repertoire that work in a political setting such as the band's "The Mess I Made," written after the first Gulf War. And there is "Across the White House Lawn" inspired by an incident about a man getting on to the grounds and waving a gun . And Fetters thinks the band's anthem "Fear Is Never Boring" (from the group's previous incarnation as the Raisins) will work in this setting. "We'll do 'Fear,' because Bush is using that to get you to vote for him," Fetters said. Meanwhile, Over the Rhine's Linford Detweiler said his wife and bandmate Karin Bergquist approached the Kerry campaign and offered their services some time ago for benefits. Detweiler hopes any musical effort can be more than just singing to the converted. "In the current climate there is an awful lot of preaching to the choir," Detweiler said. "Not a lot of people are open to the ancient art of political persuasion or open to the opposing view. We do try not to just surround ourselves with people who think like we do. As musicians we're interested in seeing more conversations between diverse people and I love the fact that are audience has been diverse." While known for their introspective songwriting Detweiler said OTR has a couple "protest songs" on their last album "Ohio," such as "How Long Have You Been Stoned?" "We always thought it was a political song, but no one else did," Detweiler said with a laugh. "It grew out of our disappointment with the way the whole Iraq thing evolved. The war began to unfold as we were recording 'Ohio' and it was troubling."
