City Beat May 26, 2004 Short Takes http://www.citybeat.com/current/musicshorttakes.shtml "The Bears dine in at Club Cafe" The Bears - Live at Club Cafe (Merging Media; thebearsmusic.com) Edited by Mike Breen And the crowd goes mild! If you watched the debut DVD release from Greater Cincinnati's greatest supergroup with the sound down and just glanced up during crowd shots, you might think you were looking at an old Evening at the Improv stand-up comedy special or perhaps some footage from a dinner theater in the Catskills, with candlelit, two-drink-minimum tables gathered up to the lip of the stage. But why would you ever watch a concert DVD with the sound off? The bulk of the DVD is, in fact, a fantastic live show from Pittsburgh featuring these insistently melodic Pop/Rock legends masterfully and, as always, joyously running through a retrospective of their career (seated fans be damned). To be fair, the audience is incredibly respectful (almost reverential at times) and enthusiastic, fitting for a band with the type of rabid cult following the Bears have amassed. The set is pretty much identical to the group's live album from a couple of years ago, featuring the best of their discography ("Superboy," "Aches and Pains," "Fear is Never Boring," "Safe In Hell," "Little Blue River" and "Caveman," to name a few) performed with beaming energy that results in a "ragged glory" vibe at times. Always a fantastic live band, the concert is great (the film quality and visual direction is surprisingly good). But especially appetizing for diehard fans is the bonus footage. One would think a "Guitar Geek Cam" would be in order, letting viewers look solely at the awe-inspiring guitar work of Adrian Belew and Rob Fetters (heck even Bob Nyswonger's hands are dazzling to watch), replicating the view from the entire front row at most Bears concerts. Live at Club Cafe's extras do give a personally-guided tour of Adrian Belew's interesting home studio and the lengthy interviews with the band members offer new insight into the The Bears' initial meeting and formation, the stories behind songs like "Fear Is Never Boring" and "Dave," influences (old-time comedian Morey Amsterdam was, believe it or not, critical to Belew's unique guitar approach) and, yes, gear. If you don't like The Bears, Live at Club Cafe won't convert you. But if you've got a great appreciation for these Pop songwriting geniuses, it's a must-have for your collection. After a mini-bidding war ( six bids and counter-bids) the winner is: Jim Andrews with a bid of $100. Rob's head will soon head to it's new resting place. It was a lot of fun, and the Free Store gets 100 bucks, not a bad deal at all.
