It was an emotional lead-up to the last few hours of broadcast, as current WOXY staffers joyfully told stories of their time at the station and played some of their own favorites. By the end of the night, not one of the on-air personalities was able to keep from getting audibly choked-up as they gave their final send-offs (each one nobly thanking the many listeners the station has had over the years) and played one last cut. The station's final song was the live version of U2's "Sunday Blood Sunday," which was the track the station signed on with all those years ago. Longtime WOXY jock (and still the voice of Miami University sports) Steve Baker was the final voice heard. A presence at the station for 20 years, Baker's farewell was a classy, Gehrig-like last goodbye. The last words uttered on the air: "Goodbye to the Future of Rock & Roll." Warm Finding New Alternatives Amazing Seattle community radio station KEXP (kexp.org), who we told you about months ago as a more than viable alternative to WOXY, appears to be reaping some of the benefits of 97X's disappearance from the Internet radio community. In the midst of a pledge drive when WOXY signed off, DJs repeatedly read e-mails from numerous new listeners/pledgers who said they were moving over from listening to 97X and giving money to KEXP so it doesn't suffer a similar fate. The Final Countdown The last few days leading up to the sign-off, the globally-lauded "Modern Rock" station ran through an "A through X" countdown that surveyed the bulk of their eclectic music library. It was a great way to show what the station has gallantly done over the years, turning on countless people to new sounds and saving endless souls from the horrors of corporate radio playlisting. The station was the first in the area (and sometimes the world) to play artists who would become some of the icons of the global music scene (from U2 to R.E.M. to Nirvana). The countdown ran through the many eras of music WOXY has endured, from its earliest years playing what used to be called College Rock (Violent Femmes, Let's Active) through the up-and-coming modern Indie rockers that have gotten some of their biggest exposure through WOXY (Bunny, Forget Cassettes, Oh My God, The Natural History). For a full list of WOXY's "A-X" rundown, go to woxy.com or altmusictv.com. Woxy.com Lives On! The station hasn't completely ruled out a return as an online presence (don't hold your breath), but the WOXY Web site will stay. The site's active message boards have helped woxy.com become a strong community of new music lovers. Cold X Games? Less than an hour after 97X signed off, an awful satellite feed took over the WOXY airspace. For die-hard WOXY listeners it was a bit like being in a really bad car accident, then getting out of your car and being hit by a semi. Limp Bizkit? Linkin Park? Nickelback? Puddle of Mudd? Not much different than that other 97 station a few clicks down the dial. But give X97 the benefit of the doubt -- promos announced that the new station (X97) was still "coming soon." And the fact that the new owners have hired Matt Sledge -- a great musical mind and loyal local music supporter from WOXY -- as the program director, gives hope for the future. ++ psychodots ++ Date: Thu, 20 May 2004 15:36:27 -0400 From: "GEORGE CORNELIUSSEN" Subject: ROB'S MACE HEAD Two bids on Rob's Mace head, the highest being $50 ( but that bid is not confirmed ).
