Friday, the biggest annual rock 'n' roll gathering returns the psychodots to active duty. Rob Fetters, Bob Nyswonger and Chris Arduser will be playing Southgate House (24 E. Third St., Newport; 859-431-2201). The wonderful Kim Taylor Band is opening the 9 p.m. show. Making a great concert even better (except for those unrepentant nicotine addicts), it's a non-smoking show ($12). They balk at calling it a reunion, but Fetters says, "It's the only time you can hear psychodots music performed live, for the dozens, nay, the hundreds, who want to hear it." For the initiated, the 'dots (and predecessor band the Raisins), are the fathers of Cincinnati's current power-pop scene. Prolific songwriters, Fetters estimates the 'dots songbook of originals at about 100 and says they'll cram as many as they can into the 2 1/2 hour show. "I always really push for doing the classic, obscure songs from the 'dots," he says. Fetters, Nyswonger and Arduser also play with Greater Cincinnati expatriate Adrian Belew as the Bears. Fetters says they're about 85 percent through a new Bears CD, recorded at Belew's home studio in Nashville, Tenn., and that they'll be back on the road (including a Southgate show) in 2004. A Bears DVD is in the works, and after several release dates it is expected out sometime this year. "We are going to challenge fans a little," said guitarist Rob Fetters. Actually, we are challenging ourselves this time." Cincinnati's legendary power pop trio, the psychodots, perform their seventh annual Thanksgiving weekend reunion concert at 8 p.m. Friday at the Southgate House, Newport. Tickets, $10 advance; $12 at the door. (859) 431-2201 (Non-smoking show). Opening act, Kim Taylor. This has become one of only two or three gigs the legendary band plays a year. Fetters says the group reached deep into its past for part of this year's set list. "This year, more than previously, we are putting in some real obscure old stuff from maybe the first couple years we were the 'dots (in the late '80s)," Fetters said. "We said, 'Do we have everything recorded?' Then we remember we don't. 'How about that song we played for three months.'" The 'dots -- Fetters, Bob Nyswonger (bass), Chris Arduser (drums) -- continue to work with Northern Kentucky native Adrian Belew. When the four get together they become the Bears, last year reviving the thrilling quartet that dates to the late '80s and releasing "Car Caught Fire," their first album in almost 15 years. And the four stayed at it. They are now writing and recording another album at Belew's Nashville studio. Their first revival project took three years to record, working around their busy schedules. "Our promise on this one is to get it done in a year," Fetters said. "We are also hoping to do a few live dates in late winter." The Bears will release a DVD of last year's concert in Pittsburgh, perhaps by Christmas. But for this weekend, it's reliving the glory days of the psychodots, the power trio that grew out of the Raisin Band in the '70s and '80s. Fetters said they would be performing a couple Raisin favorites, as well. Besides the Bears' project, all three band members stay busy: Fetters plans a solo release in the next couple months; Nyswonger has been producing roots groups at his home studio, performs with Bucket and has his real estate career; Arduser has his Graveblankets and plays with the Bluebirds. Fetters says it's always fun to reconvene the 'dots. "We talk about playing with each other all the time. We feel duty bound to do it because we love this material. To stay interested for a couple hours you have to dig deep for material and that's what we hope to do this year." Music starts at 6:30, the emotional fallout lasts a week or so. Tuesday, 12/2, the Faux Frenchmen at the Vineyard Cafe Wine Room in Hyde Park Square, 7:30-11pm. As evidenced by our previous two First Tuesday Vineyard shows, rarely are music and a venue so perfectly suited to one another. Hear Karen Addie dishonor Stan Lee. See Brian Lovely break guitar strings by sheer intimidation. Have dinner or just hang at the bar, but don't miss this show. And, speaking of breaking strings, see a rare George Cunningham/John Schmidt intimate coffeehouse performance this Saturday, 12/6, 8-10pm, at the Pleasant Perk in Pleasant Ridge. Songs from the upcoming solo record, weird covers, cartoon themes, caffeine buzz at bedtime. Incidentally, if you missed the Cincinnati Enquirer piece on the Frenchmen a couple of Fridays back, read it at www.graveblankets.com. You'll also find directions to all the shows, thanks of course to The Mysterious Jeff Burroway.
